The whole 'who did this to you' protective rage thing is just the predator's instinct to keep his catch from being damaged by anyone else. Their defining moments are all about possession—him marking her, her trying to erase the marks. It's not healthy, it's not romantic in a traditional sense, and the book doesn't really pretend it is. The appeal is in the high-stakes tension of the chase, even after she's supposedly been caught.
