Hmm, I'm not sure I've read enough recent bestsellers to give a definitive list. My romance diet is pretty much limited to fanfiction these days, where the character types are whatever the original fandom provides!

Historical romance has its own enduring staples. The rogue, the rake, the duke in financial distress, the wallflower with hidden wit, and the bluestocking. The fun is in the constraints of the era—the propriety, the marriage markets, the limited choices for women—and how love finds a way within or in spite of those rules. A current favorite is the 'wallflower alliance,' where a group of overlooked ladies decide to take their destinies into their own hands, with hilarious and romantic results.

Fantasy romance is dominated by powerful magical beings: fae kings, dragon shifters, demon lords, and sorcerers. Their love interests are often humans or lesser magical beings with a hidden, unique power or immense inner strength. The appeal is the scale—epic worlds, magical bonds, and loves that literally shake kingdoms. The 'forbidden love' between warring factions or species is a major plot driver here. The heroines are increasingly just as powerful, becoming queens and warriors in their own right.

What character types appear most often in a psychological novel thriller?

The 'resource-poor' protagonist creates such great tension. Not a genius or a fighter, just someone with average intelligence and no special skills trapped in a bad situation. Their psychology is problem-solving under sheer terror. They make mistakes, they panic, they have to use mundane objects in clever ways. It's relatable in a way that hyper-competent heroes never are. You think, 'What would I actually do?' and the answer is usually 'not much better.'

What character types appear most often in reverse harem stories?

Honestly? I get tired of seeing the same five guys with different hair colors. Why does the smart one always have glasses and a monotone voice? Why is the protective one always inexplicably a master chef? It feels like writers just check boxes off a list instead of creating characters who might overlap in traits. I'd love a reverse harem where all the love interests are, say, different kinds of artists, or scholars, or even have similar personalities that clash in new ways. The strict adherence to type makes a lot of stories predictable from the character introduction page.
