I think the definition of 'thriller' gets a bit fuzzy with classics. If we include tales of adventure and suspense, then Jack London’s stories set in the Yukon, like 'To Build a Fire', are incredible survival thrillers. The antagonist is nature itself—brutal, indifferent cold.

The tension is relentless and physical. Every mistake the man makes ratchets up the danger, and the narrative follows his desperate, losing battle against the elements with brutal clarity. The thrill is visceral and existential, rooted in a very real, very immediate struggle for life. It’s thrilling in the most primal sense.

I’m just sitting here writing down all these author names for my reading list. My to-be-read pile did not need this today, but I’m not even mad.

Charlotte Perkins Gilman's 'The Yellow Wallpaper' is a short story that absolutely belongs in this pantheon. It's a devastating work of psychological and feminist horror. The creeping madness narrated by a woman suffering under the 'rest cure' is unbearable and brilliant. The horror is all too real, rooted in patriarchal medical practices. It’s a story that uses the gothic tradition to expose a societal horror, and its power hasn't diminished one bit. It proves the most effective horror often has no monster at all, just a crushing reality.

The short stories of Max Beerbohm are wonderfully witty and graceful. He was a caricaturist and essayist, and his fiction has that same light, satirical touch. 'Enoch Soames' is a fantastic story about a mediocre poet who makes a deal with the devil to visit the British Museum library 100 years in the future to see if he's remembered. The humor is dry, intellectual, and rooted in the literary world of the 1890s. It's a different pace—more about the smile of appreciation than the guffaw. If you like humor that's elegantly written and pokes fun at artistic pretension, Beerbohm is a hidden treasure. He doesn't have the huge output of others, but what's there is finely crafted.

What classic psychological thriller short stories shaped the genre?

Let’s give a nod to Ray Bradbury's 'The Veldt.' It's a sci-fi premise about a nursery that projects children's thoughts, but it's a razor-sharp psychological thriller about parenting, technology, and repressed rage. The parents' growing fear of their own children and the room they created is palpable. The children's psychological attachment to the violent African veldt simulation is a terrifying manifestation of their Oedipal fantasies. The suspense builds as the parents realize they've been outsourced by a machine that now reflects their kids' murderous impulses. It's a thriller about technology making the subconscious lethally tangible.
