My local library only had a few, so my order was completely scrambled. I read 'Beechwood', then 'Breakers', then 'Crossways'. It was a weird way to meet the characters, like watching flashbacks out of sequence. Derrick's whole vibe in the later books hit differently when I hadn't seen his introduction. Do yourself a favor and find the first one.

I tried reading 'A Gilded Death' first because I'm obsessive about chronology. It was good, but it's much shorter and feels more like an extended prologue. 'Murder at the Breakers' is where the series really finds its feet. If you're unsure, maybe start with the first novel and loop back to the prequel if you get hooked.

Library pro-tip: If your library uses Libby or OverDrive, you can often create a "series hold." It'll automatically place you in line for the next book in the official series order once you return the one you're on. Saved me so much hassle with this series and others.

The series is a perfect blend of Agatha Christie and Downton Abbey, set in America. The order is pretty straightforward: five books, all starting with 'Murder at...'. Just go in the order they were printed. The continuity of side characters—like Emma's sister and ne'er-do-well brother—is one of the best parts, and it builds naturally book by book.

I'm a sucker for any mystery that uses its setting as more than just wallpaper. Newport in the Gilded Age is practically a character in these books. Reading them in order lets you see the seasons change, the social climbers rise and fall, and the tension between old money and new. It's brilliant social commentary wrapped in a whodunit.

For a completist like me, the Wikipedia page for the author often has a bibliography section broken down by series. It's dry but accurate.

Which Alyssa Maxwell book comes first in the Gilded Newport mysteries?

I'm a sucker for any mystery where the detective is a journalist. It makes the snooping feel justified. Emma's profession is established right in 'Murder at the Breakers' as a key part of her character.
