The cover blurbs often say 'A Young Jane Tennison Novel' which is the key phrase to look for. That distinguishes them from the original 'Prime Suspect' novelizations. If you're searching online or in a store, that subtitle will guide you to the right series.

Honestly, just pick up 'Tennison'. If you like the first chapter, you'll probably want to read them all, and then the order becomes your next problem to happily solve. Don't overthink it before you've even started. Dive in and see if the character grabs you.

It's interesting to compare Jane's trajectory with other long-running detective characters. Rebus or Morse have longevity, but their core selves are pretty fixed. Jane is arguably one of the most dynamic, changing protagonists in the genre. That's why the sequence of the books is their most important feature.

The shift from the 70s to the 90s is also a shift in the type of crime. Less 'street' robbery and more complex, psychological, organized, or forensically challenging cases. The series order mirrors the changing nature of police work itself. It's clever writing.

Has anyone else noticed how the titles evolve? The early ones are more straightforward ('Tennison', 'Hidden Killers'), while the later ones get more evocative and grim ('Blunt Force', 'Unholy Murder', 'Dark Rooms'). It subtly mirrors the darker, more complex cases she takes on as she climbs the ranks. A small but neat piece of thematic cohesion.

Wait, are we talking about the Lynda La Plante books? The Prime Suspect prequels? I think I saw the TV show but never read them. Are the books way better? Might have to check my library app.
Has anyone read the later novels La Plante wrote after the original series? I heard they continue her story past the TV finale. I wonder if she gets promoted further or if the books explore her post-retirement life. That could add another chapter to the career order that the TV show didn't cover.
Can we talk about the supporting characters in the books? Some, like her early mentor, are fantastic additions. It's interesting to wonder if any of these book-original characters were mentioned in throwaway TV dialogue that I've forgotten. The books create a whole squad of people who shaped her, most of whom are absent from the TV timeline.
This implies that by the time we reach the TV era, she's either lost touch with them or they've left the force. It adds a layer of implied history and turnover. The books populate her past with vivid people, making the TV present, where she often stands alone, feel like the result of many personal and professional departures over the years.
