What Is The Complete Jodi Taylor Book Order For Time Police?
As a newcomer obsessed with Jodi Taylor's St. Mary's universe, deciding where the Time Police spin-offs fit within the full series reading order is giving me major timeline headaches.

Imagine a buddy cop movie, but one cop is a by-the-book rule follower, one is a traumatized genius from a chaotic family, and one is a cheerful tech whiz with a secret. Now set it across all of history. That's the vibe. The book order is the sequence of their cases and personal growth. Each novel builds on the last, so publication order is definitely the way to go for that developing dynamic.

The contrast between the two series is what makes the universe sing. Reading a St. Mary's book where they barely escape a disaster, then jumping to a Time Police book where they have to deal with the fallout from that exact disaster, is a meta-narrative joy. So the 'complete' order is whatever order lets you appreciate that joke. Sometimes I read them side-by-side, chronologically by event, and it's a blast.

The evolution of the tech is cool. In 'Doing Time,' they're using standard-issue gear. By 'Saving Time,' Luke and his team are modifying and improvising, bringing a bit of St. Mary's-style ingenuity to the rigid Time Police protocols. Reading in order lets you see that technological creep, mirroring the characters' personal growth away from blind obedience.

I adore how the spinoff flips the perspective. In St. Mary's, the Time Police are the humorless antagonists. In their own books, you see the bureaucratic nightmare of trying to prevent time paradoxes while dealing with idiots like our beloved historians. The complete reading order for their story is the three novels and the novella. But to truly 'get' it, you need the context of the St. Mary's series, particularly from book 8 onward. Matthew's presence is the bridge that makes the whole thing work emotionally.

Why does Matthew Farrell have to be so compelling? His struggle with his identity and legacy is the emotional through-line. You see glimpses of it in the later St. Mary's books, but the Time Police series is where he gets to truly define himself. For his character's journey, the order is non-negotiable: you need his backstory from St. Mary's. Without it, he's just a moody teen. With it, he's one of the most nuanced characters in the universe.

Book 1 Saints and Sinners
She was the light to my dark.
The saint to my sinner. with her innocent eyes and devilish curves.
A Madonna that was meant to be admired but never touched.
Until someone took that innocence from her.
She left.
The darkness in my heart was finally complete.
I avenged her, I killed for her, but she never came back.
Until I saw her again. An angel dancing around a pole for money.
She didn’t know I owned that club. She didn’t know I was watching.
This time I won’t let her escape.
I will make her back into the girl I knew.
Whether she likes it or not.
Book 2 Judge and Jury
I can’t stop watching her.
I’m not even sure I want to.
Taylor Lawson, blonde, beautiful, and totally oblivious to how much dangers she’s in.
She’s also the one juror in my upcoming murder trial that hasn’t been bought.
The one who can put me behind bars for a very long time.
I know I should execute her.
After all that’s what I do.
I am the Judge.
I eliminate threats to The Family.
And Taylor is a threat.
But I don’t want to kill her.
Possessing her, making her love me seems like a much better plan for this particular Juror.

"There's something so fascinating about your innocence," he breathes, so close I can feel the warmth of his breath against my lips. "It's a shame my own darkness is going to destroy it. However, I think I might enjoy the act of doing so."
Being reborn as an immortal isn't particularly easy. For Rosie, it's made harder as she is sentenced to live her life within Time's territory, a powerful Immortal known for his callous behaviour and unlawful followers.
However, the way he appears to her is not all there is to him. In fear of a powerful danger, Time whisks her away throughout his own personal history. But going back in time has it's consequences; mainly which, involve all the dark secrets he's held within eternity.
But Rosie won't lie. The way she feels toward him isn't just their mate bond. It's a dark, dangerous attraction that bypasses how she has felt for past relationships.
This is raw, passionate and sexy. And she can't escape it.
Eliza Ward does not fall through time.
Time bends toward her.
Pulled from the present into Revolutionary America, Eliza becomes trapped in a landscape where history repeats unevenly, battles restart with variations, and memory functions as both anchor and weapon. She is not a chosen heroine, but a constant: a woman whose awareness destabilizes the moment itself.
She meets Mercy Hale, a midwife and witch who understands time as a negotiation rather than a force to command. Mercy aids Eliza’s survival while refusing the role of savior, having already learned the cost of standing too close to history’s center.
During a looping battle, Eliza saves Thomas Reed, a Continental soldier who does not shift when time does. Thomas is an anchor: steady, observant, unchanged across iterations. Their bond deepens in an almost-normal village where time briefly behaves.
Eliza’s intervention triggers time’s response. Rather than immediate destruction, time collects interest. Mercy bargains to spare Eliza and Thomas, sacrificing her own future to stabilize the present. Time extracts payment from Eliza as well, stripping away her voice, the very tool she uses to name and hold moments in place.
Silenced and unmoored, Eliza is violently displaced back into the original battle. Unable to anchor the moment, she watches Thomas die in the version of history that was always waiting beneath her defiance.
Told in rotating perspectives between Eliza, Thomas, and Mercy, The Hours That Refused to Behave is a lyrical time-travel novel about revolution, restraint, and consequence, asking not whether history can be changed, but who pays when it is.
For a series about time travel, it's pretty important to experience it in the right order. Don't be a time criminal. Read 'Doing Time', then 'Lies, Damned Lies, and History', then 'The Good, the Bad, and the History'. The Time Police would approve.
Matthew's journey is the spine. Read St Mary's 1-10 to get his parents' epic love story and his weird childhood. Then jump to Time Police 1. Seeing this kid we watched grow up in the background of St Mary's now as a trainee, dealing with his famous parents' legacy, is incredibly satisfying. His perspective links the two series more than any plot event.
What's the worst that could happen if you read out of order? You'll be spoiled for some plot twists. Big deal. In a series where the history is the backdrop and the characters are the foreground, spoilers aren't the end of the world. Sometimes knowing a fate makes the journey there more poignant. Don't let perfect order be the enemy of good fun.
Jodi Taylor's writing style is so bingeable that I blasted through the novels without stopping for the shorts. I don't feel like I missed out on critical plot, just some extra character moments. The core story is all in the novels. The extras are exactly that—extra. Wonderful, but not essential for understanding the saga of Max and her disastrous historical field trips.
I love that this question pops up every few months. It means new people are discovering Jodi Taylor! The community always rallies with helpful lists and gentle guidance. It's one of the nicest fandoms because we all remember that initial confusion and subsequent obsession. Welcome, new reader! Grab 'Just One Damned Thing After Another' and clear your schedule.
