What Is The Complete Joe Pickett Novel Series In Order?

As a fan of C.J. Box's outdoor thrillers, I'd love to have the chronological Joe Pickett reading list for a proper series marathon from the very first book.

Wait, is there a new one out this year? I feel like I saw 'Shadows Reel' on the shelf recently, but I'm not sure what comes next. I should check the author's website. Anyway, the order is pretty much by publication date, and they're all numbered on the spines now, which helps.

Let's see... I think the order goes: 'Open Season', then 'Savage Run', 'Winterkill', 'Trophy Hunt'... after that it's 'Out of Range', 'In Plain Sight', 'Free Fire'... then 'Blood Trail', 'Below Zero', 'Nowhere to Run'... 'Cold Wind' comes next, then 'Force of Nature', 'Breaking Point', 'Stone Cold'... oh, and 'The Highway' is in there... then 'Vicious Circle', 'Wolf Pack', 'Long Range', 'Dark Sky', and finally 'Shadows Reel'.

Phew. That's from memory, so I might have swapped two in the middle, but I'm pretty confident. The library usually has them in order on the shelf, which is helpful.

The series is comfort food for me, but with a thrilling edge. I know I'm going to get a well-told story with characters I care about. The Wyoming setting is a huge part of the appeal; it's beautiful and brutal, and Box describes it perfectly.

Definitely read them in order. The personal stakes get higher and more complex as the series goes on, and that only works if you've been along for the whole ride.

My local bookstore has a whole section dedicated to C.J. Box, and they keep them in order. It's: 'Open Season', 'Savage Run', 'Winterkill', 'Trophy Hunt', 'Out of Range', 'In Plain Sight', 'Free Fire', 'Blood Trail', 'Below Zero', 'Nowhere to Run', 'Cold Wind', 'Force of Nature', 'Breaking Point', 'Stone Cold', 'The Highway', 'Vicious Circle', 'Wolf Pack', 'Long Range', 'Dark Sky', and 'Shadows Reel'.

If you're an audiobook listener, the entire series is performed by David Chandler, and he's the voice of Joe Pickett for me now. His narration adds so much to the atmosphere.

The order matters less for the mysteries themselves, which are mostly self-contained, and more for the serialized elements of Joe's personal and professional life. His kids grow up, his wife's business evolves, and his reputation changes.

I envy anyone starting from the beginning. You've got twenty books of consistent, page-turning storytelling ahead of you. The Wyoming setting is a character in itself, described with such love and detail that you feel like you've been there.

Here's the full list, numbered for clarity:
1. Open Season (2001)
2. Savage Run (2002)
3. Winterkill (2003)
4. Trophy Hunt (2004)
5. Out of Range (2005)
6. In Plain Sight (2006)
7. Free Fire (2007)
8. Blood Trail (2008)
9. Below Zero (2009)
10. Nowhere to Run (2010)
11. Cold Wind (2011)
12. Force of Nature (2012)
13. Breaking Point (2013)
14. Stone Cold (2014)
15. The Highway (2015)
16. Vicious Circle (2017)
17. Wolf Pack (2019)
18. Long Range (2020)
19. Dark Sky (2021)
20. Shadows Reel (2022)

That's the core series. It's a masterful example of long-term series writing. The world feels continuous and alive. Characters age, relationships change, and the community evolves.

I'd advise against reading summaries of later books, as even the blurbs can contain spoilers for earlier character developments. Go in blind and enjoy the ride from 'Open Season' onward.

Glad someone's asking about this. I've got them all lined up on my shelf. Start with 'Open Season', obviously. Then it's 'Savage Run', 'Winterkill', 'Trophy Hunt', 'Out of Range', 'In Plain Sight', 'Free Fire', 'Blood Trail', 'Below Zero', and 'Nowhere to Run'. After that, you've got 'Cold Wind', 'Force of Nature', 'Breaking Point', 'Stone Cold', 'The Highway', 'Vicious Circle', 'Wolf Pack', 'Long Range', 'Dark Sky', and the latest is 'Shadows Reel'.

There are some novellas and short stories floating around, but those twenty are the core novels. The order matters more than in some series because characters evolve, relationships change, and past events get referenced. Nate Romanowski's storyline, in particular, needs to be followed sequentially.

If you're into audiobooks, David Chandler narrates the whole series and he's phenomenal—really captures Joe's quiet determination. Just start at the beginning; you won't regret it.

What is the correct Joe Pickett novel series order?

so I've experienced them in real time. That's the best way, but since you can't time travel, reading them in order is the next best thing. You get to see the world change around Joe, and him change with it. The early 2000s feel different from the late 2010s in these books, and that's reflected in the plots and technology. My recommendation is to get the first three as a bundle and see if you like the style. If you do, you have a long, wonderful journey ahead. Use a list to keep track. Some people find the middle books (around 8-12) to be the strongest, but they all have their merits. The key is the cumulative effect. By the time you reach the newer books, Joe feels like an old friend whose every decision and worry you understand completely, because you've been there for all of it.

The 'Joe Pickett' series by C.J. Box is one of those crime thriller collections that hooks you from the start. It begins with 'Open Season', where Joe, a game warden in Wyoming, stumbles into a murder investigation that sets the tone for the series. The next is 'Savage Run', followed by 'Winterkill', 'Trophy Hunt', and 'Out of Range'. Each book builds on Joe’s character, his struggles with his job, and his family life. The series continues with 'In Plain Sight', 'Free Fire', 'Blood Trail', 'Below Zero', 'Nowhere to Run', 'Cold Wind', 'Force of Nature', 'Breaking Point', 'Stone Cold', 'Endangered', 'Off the Grid', 'Vicious Circle', 'The Disappeared', 'Wolf Pack', 'Long Range', and 'Dark Sky'. The latest is 'Shadows Reel'. The beauty of the series is how it balances standalone stories with an overarching narrative about Joe’s growth and the evolving challenges he faces.
