My pet peeve: when the narrator's unreliability is revealed via a diary entry or a letter they wrote earlier that contradicts their current story. It feels like a cheap, found-object solution. Show me their unreliability through the live-action of their thoughts and interactions, not through a convenient scrap of paper in the attic. The best revelations come from the reader's own dawning realization, not from being handed a contradictory document. That 'aha' moment should feel earned by the careful layering of subtle clues, not delivered by a plot coupon.
