Is the series finished now with 'The Redemption'? It felt like a conclusion, but you never know with thriller writers. Even if more come out, the current chronological order is locked in. New books would just extend the list from the end.

Internal chronology schminology. These are procedural thrillers, not 'The Dark Tower'. Read them in the order they were written. You'll be fine. The only exception might be short stories, but those are bonuses, not required reading for the main plot arcs.

Why complicate a good thing? Grab 'Split Second' and dive in. The order is self-explanatory from there. Each book adds another layer to Sean and Michelle's partnership, from reluctant allies to a tight-knit team running their own firm. Reading them out of order would spoil some of that gradual build.

My local library has them all, but they were out of order on the shelf. Took me a minute to sort it out mentally. For anyone else checking them out: it's the ten books listed by everyone else here. The librarian confirmed the order for me last week.

Honestly, I read 'Hour Game' first by accident and still enjoyed it. But going back to 'Split Second' later, I realized I'd missed some foundational character moments. So while each mystery is self-contained, the relationship arc is serialized. Do yourself a favor and start at the beginning.

The series order is straightforward: 1. Split Second (2003), 2. Hour Game (2004), 3. Simple Genius (2007), 4. First Family (2009), 5. The Sixth Man (2011), 6. King and Maxwell (2013). Any list that deviates from this is either including crossovers or is just wrong.

I'm just here for the Michelle Maxwell appreciation. Her character growth is the best part of the series, and it's 100% cumulative. From a reckless agent to a strategic leader, it's all in the order. You can't fast-forward that.

How do you read the King & Maxwell books in chronological order?

Honestly, I read 'The Target' first because it was on sale, and I didn't feel lost at all. These aren't super serialized like some fantasy series. You can pick up almost any book and get a complete story. The chronological order is more for purists who want to trace every single character beat. For everyone else, grab whatever's available at the library and dive in. The core appeal is the banter and the action, not a meticulously plotted overarching saga.

What is the correct reading order for the King and Maxwell series?

The series kind of fizzles out after 'The Sixth Man', in my opinion. 'King and Maxwell' (the last book) felt like a reunion tour rather than a fresh story. So if you're pressed for time, the first four are the essential peak. The order still matters to get there, though.
