There's no official news about them getting rid of 5e, especially since One D&D is meant to be backward compatible. The ecosystem will probably keep supporting it for a long time while the new edition rolls out. My main worry with edition changes is when a favorite story just stops, which I ran into with the werewolf saga 'Beyond Beta's Rejection'. It's a complete tale about a pack outcast forging her own path, so you get the full arc without waiting for uncertain updates, which is a nice change of pace from corporate publishing schedules.

D&D Beyond is not “getting rid of” 5e. The platform has updated the rules for 5e, introduced a revised ruleset, and marked the old version as Legacy, meaning it’s still accessible but the default display now highlights the newer rules.

Currently, D&D Beyond is highlighting the new 5e rules (2024 version) as the default, while the 2014 version is labeled Legacy. Some players may feel the old 5e is being “phased out,” but it’s still in your account—you just need to manually access it if you want.

The official D&D 5e revision (2024 update) has been integrated into D&D Beyond, and old data is marked as Legacy. This may make it appear that the old 5e is being removed, but the legacy content is still accessible through settings—it’s just that the new rules are now the default in the tool.

Is DNDbeyond shutting down?

There’s currently no official announcement that D&D Beyond will shut down. Some affiliated projects, like the 3D virtual tabletop Sigil, are scheduled to end in 2026, but that is a separate project, not the core platform.

Is the Player's Handbook 5th Edition PDF compatible with D&D Beyond?

I’ve been playing Dungeons & Dragons for years, and I often get asked about the compatibility between the 'Player’s Handbook 5th Edition' PDF and D&D Beyond. From my experience, they aren’t directly compatible because D&D Beyond operates as a separate digital platform with its own licensed content. If you own the PDF, you can’t just upload it to D&D Beyond and expect it to work seamlessly. However, you can manually input the information from the PDF into your D&D Beyond account if you want to use the content there. It’s a bit of a hassle, but it’s doable if you’re willing to put in the time. D&D Beyond does offer its own digital version of the 'Player’s Handbook,' which is fully integrated with their tools, so that’s usually the easier route if you’re looking for convenience.
