Okay, hear me out, because everyone always recommends the big names like Tess Gerritsen or J.D. Robb, but have you tried diving into indie or smaller-press stuff in the romantic suspense space? I stumbled on this self-published author, Leslie A. Kelly, who writes these ‘Rogues of Ravenswood’ books. The lead in the first one is a former cop turned true-crime podcaster who has to team up with the detective she basically accused of corruption in an old episode. The banter is top-tier, and she’s believably competent without being a superhuman action hero. It feels gritty but not grimdark, and the romance actually develops alongside the case instead of feeling like two separate plots glued together. Sometimes the bigger series get formulaic, but these had a fresh energy to them.

I find a lot of detective romance leans too hard on making the female lead physically formidable, like a former special ops soldier, which can start to feel samey. What resonates more with me is professional competence under pressure. Karin Slaughter's Will Trent series has Sara Linton, a pediatrician and medical examiner. Her strength is her clinical, unflinching expertise in the face of horrific violence, and her emotional resilience. The romantic subplot with Will is complicated and adult, fraught with their respective baggage. It’s not a cozy read, but the strength shown is deeply intellectual and moral, which for me is far more compelling than just another kickass heroine.
