Give the first fifty pages a shot. The opening siege on the Silver Spire is pure, pulse-pounding fantasy spectacle. That chapter alone sold me.
The magic has a cool cost—every major spell requires a 'memory' as sacrifice, which leads to some poignant moments as powerful characters forget their own loved ones. It's not a happy read, but it's gripping in a bleak way. Just go in knowing it's a dense, political story, not a heroic adventure.
I almost skipped 'Devil's Rise' because the cover made it look like generic dark fantasy schlock, but a friend shoved it at me insisting it was different. It's really a political thriller wearing fantasy armor—the demon lord isn't some rampaging monster but a calculating strategist playing a very long game against the celestial bureaucracy. The magic system has this fascinating legalistic bent to it, where power is bound by ancient pacts and loopholes.
That said, the pacing in the middle third drags a bit while the author sets up all the factional chess pieces. If you're a fan of quick, action-driven plots like 'The Witcher', you might find sections a slog. But if you enjoy intricate world-building where the 'evil' side has a disturbingly reasonable manifesto, it's a standout. The final confrontation is less about a big battle and more about a courtroom drama with soul-binding contracts, which I found weirdly refreshing.
Not worth it, in my opinion. The premise is cool, but the execution feels like the author is trying too hard to be clever. Every character speaks in the same overly witty, metaphor-heavy voice, and the political intrigue becomes confusing rather than complex. I lost track of who was betraying whom and eventually stopped caring.
I know some people love the subversion of tropes, but for me, a fantasy book needs either compelling characters or a plot that moves. This had neither. The main demon lord is so emotionally distant he's impossible to connect with. I dropped it around the halfway mark and don't feel like I missed much.
