Some readers might be disappointed if they go in expecting the same competitive banter from the first book. The separation in 'Ruthless Vows' means a lot of the interaction is through letters again, which I loved, but it does change the face-to-face spark. The rivalry plot continues in the sense that they’re on opposite sides of a war, technically, but their personal conflict is mostly resolved.
What takes over is the external pressure—the manipulations of Dacre and Enva, the cost of the war, the sacrifices they have to make. The ‘rivalry’ becomes less about each other and more about them versus the circumstances keeping them apart. It’s a natural progression, but it does feel like a different kind of story halfway through.

It continues by putting the established bond under immense strain. They’re physically separated, working for opposing divine sides in the war, so the rivalry is institutional now, not personal. The letters become lifelines, but also sources of danger. The plot deepens the mythology around the gods, forcing Iris and Roman to navigate loyalties when their hearts are clearly elsewhere. The romantic tension isn’t about whether they like each other anymore, but whether they can survive to be together.

I honestly don’t think the rivalry is the main driver anymore by the second book—‘Ruthless Vows’. Iris and Roman have gone through too much, shared too many letters, lost each other and found each other again. Calling it a rivalry feels like talking about the first book. The plot continuation is more about them being separated by the war, trying to communicate through magical typewriters across enemy lines, while dealing with bigger threats from the gods.
The real tension isn’t whether they’re rivals, but whether they can reunite when their loyalties are being tested by higher powers. It’s less ‘divine rivals’ and more ‘divine allies against a common foe’, though I suppose the title still works if you consider the gods they’re up against. The letters are still fantastic, but the dynamic has fundamentally shifted.

Okay, so I actually had to go back and flip through my copy of 'Ruthless Vows' to remember everyone clearly because some of them just slide in and out. The main new face is definitely Attie—short for Astoria—who becomes Iris's bunkmate and friend at the Oath Gazette. She's a breath of fresh air, super sharp and pragmatic, and she kind of grounds Iris when she's spiraling about Roman. Honestly, her dry commentary was a highlight for me.
Then there's Tobias Bex, the features editor at the Gazette. He's less of a friend and more of this grumpy, overworked mentor figure who's constantly stressed about deadlines and keeping his reporters alive in a war zone. He adds a different kind of pressure to the newsroom dynamic.
Oh, and we can't forget the Shadow, the mysterious new villain pulling strings from the Dacre side. We don't get a real name, just this unsettling, powerful presence that makes the conflict feel bigger and more sinister. It shifts the scale from a personal grudge match between gods to something with wider, creepier implications. That character still gives me chills thinking about it.
Man, you're asking the real question, aren't you? I tore through 'Ruthless Vows' the day it dropped. I'll be straight: if you loved the letter-writing dynamic and the gut-wrenching cliffhanger of the first book, this is absolutely the pay-off. It feels like the stakes get even more personal, and Iris and Roman's connection is tested in ways that had me actually pacing my living room.
Some parts do feel a bit...stretched? Like the middle section spends a lot of time on war logistics that didn't always hold my attention. But the last third—oh my god, the last third. It delivers on the emotional promises of the first book and then some. It doesn't just rehash the first book's magic; it builds on it, even if the journey there has a couple slower patches.
The ending of 'Divine Rivals' wraps up the main characters' journeys with emotional intensity. Iris and Roman finally confront the gods who've been manipulating their fates, using their rival-turned-love dynamic to outsmart divine schemes. Their bond becomes the key to breaking the cycle of divine interference, sacrificing their individual powers to free humanity from celestial control. Iris loses her prophetic visions but gains peace, while Roman gives up his strategic genius to ensure stability. They open a bookstore together, symbolizing their new life built on choice rather than destiny. Minor characters like Marisol find redemption, and the epilogue hints at their legacy influencing future generations.
What really struck me about the escalating rivalry in 'Divine Rivals: Ruthless Vows' is how deeply personal it becomes. At first, it’s almost like a game—two brilliant minds clashing over ideology and power, each convinced they’re right. But as the story unfolds, their pride gets tangled up in every decision, and the stakes stop being abstract. It’s no longer just about winning; it’s about not losing face, not backing down. The author does this subtle thing where they weave in flashbacks to quieter moments, making you realize how much these characters could’ve been allies under different circumstances.
Then there’s the external pressure—the world around them is literally crumbling, and their feud starts feeding into that chaos. Side characters take sides, old wounds resurface, and suddenly, their rivalry isn’t just theirs anymore. It’s like watching a snowball turn into an avalanche. By the final act, every interaction crackles with this desperate energy, like they’re both trapped in a cycle they hate but can’t escape. That’s what makes it so gripping—you see the tragedy in it, even as you can’ look away.
