Jacob's imprinting on Renesmee is usually this massive neon sign flashing 'POTENTIAL ETHICAL NIGHTMARE.' A lot of the fics I've waded through are trying to figure out if what they have can ever be a real relationship, or if it's just this bizarre supernatural compulsion. You've got Jacob, who spent an entire saga pining for Bella, suddenly and irrevocably bound to her daughter. That's... a lot to unpack. The conflict often isn't about outside threats, it's all internal: Is my love real? Am I a monster for feeling this? Does she even have a choice?
Writers who lean into that—the quiet horror of the setup, the way it upends every dynamic in the Cullen family—tend to produce the most interesting stuff. The ones that just treat it as a fluffy, destined romance kind of miss the point of why the imprinting was so controversial to begin with. The best stories make you sit with the discomfort.
Honestly, I find most of it incredibly boring because it always goes the same way. Either it's pure, uncomplicated fluff where the imprinting magically solves every problem, or it's an overly dramatic angst-fest where everyone hates Jacob for no reason. The real conflict should be about agency. Renesmee grows up super fast, right? So you have this being with an adult mind in a rapidly maturing body, and a wolf imprinted on her as an infant. Does she ever get to consent to any of it, or is her entire life path predetermined?
I'd read a fic that actually let Renesmee rebel against the imprint, or question it, or even resent it. But I've never seen one that goes there. It's always just accepted as this beautiful, perfect thing. Feels like a missed opportunity for something way more compelling.
Mostly it seems to be about overcoming the 'ick' factor for everyone else. Bella and Edward's initial revulsion, the pack's disapproval, navigating a world that sees them as unnatural. The emotional core is usually proving that their bond is pure against all odds. It's less about internal conflict and more about external validation, which can get repetitive.

The absolute most common one has to be A/U scenarios where imprinting never happens or goes very differently. You'll get stories where Jacob flat-out refuses the imprint, feeling it’s unnatural or a violation of Renesmee's autonomy, and has to grapple with his wolf pack and the Cullens. There's also a lot of 'time-travel fix-it' plots where an older Renesmee or Jacob goes back to prevent the imprint, only to find genuine feelings develop anyway.
Another huge theme is the coming-of-age slow burn, but aged up obviously. Writers explore what their dynamic could be like once she’s physically and mentally an adult, navigating a world where the pack and the vampires have some uneasy truce. The conflict usually stems from external forces—maybe a new threat forces them to work together, and old loyalties are tested.
I’ve also seen a surprising number of darker, more metaphysical takes. Like, Renesmee discovering her hybrid powers let her break the imprint bond herself, or Jacob’s wolf spirit being tied to something older than the Quileute legends. Those can get pretty out there, but the good ones use the weirdness to examine consent and destiny in a way the source material glossed over.
Jacob's emotional conflict in 'Twilight' fanfiction is a goldmine for writers who love diving into messy, heart-wrenching loyalty shifts. His bond with Bella is rooted in years of friendship and unrequited love, making his eventual imprinting on Renesmee feel like a betrayal—both to Bella and himself. Fanfics often amplify this tension by exploring his guilt, especially when Bella reacts with horror or anger. Some stories frame imprinting as a biological curse, stripping him of agency, while others paint it as a twisted redemption, a way to stay connected to Bella through her daughter.
What fascinates me is how fanfiction twists canon to either vilify or vindicate Jacob. Darker takes portray him as trapped, resentful of the imprint bond, while fluffier versions lean into paternal instincts, softening the creep factor. The best fics don’t shy from the discomfort—they let Jacob rage, grieve, or even reject the bond entirely, giving him the emotional complexity Stephenie Meyer glossed over. It’s a playground for angst lovers, especially when writers weave in pack dynamics, where the imprint fractures his brotherhood with the wolves.
