Is there a collection that focuses on Indian horror beyond the ghost stories? Like, psychological horror or weird fiction? I feel like that's an untapped vein in translations. I'd love to read something as chilling as Japanese horror but with Indian cultural underpinnings.

A recent discovery for me was 'What It Means When a Man Falls from the Sky' by Lesley Nneka Arimah. She's Nigerian, not Indian—oops! My bad. See, this is why I need lists like this. My brain mixes up all my 'to-read' lists from different cultures.

Just lurking here because my 'to-read' list from Indian authors is embarrassingly short. Taking notes from all these suggestions. Anyone else feel like you need a separate lifetime just for reading?

Skip the obvious ones for a second and find 'The Adivasi Will Not Dance' by Hansda Sowvendra Shekhar. It's raw, politically charged, and focuses on tribal communities in Jharkhand, voices you rarely see in mainstream Indian writing in English. It's not an easy, comfortable read, but it's incredibly important and eye-opening.

Looking for something playful with language? 'If You See Me, Don't Say Hi' by Neel Patel has a very conversational, almost gossipy tone. The stories deal with Indian-American lives, family pressure, and queer identity. They're sharp, witty, and feel very of-the-moment.

Forbidden dreams is a collection of fast paced, drama filled, pleasure stimulating stories that ignites that spark and passion for sinful desires that knows no bounds. Get to read stories in your favourite genres—billionaire, mafia, werewolf, fantasy, college sports, age gap, forbidden love, M×M, fetishes, and more.
For something utterly unique, track down 'Chauthi Koot' by Waryam Singh Sandhu. It's a collection of stories from the Punjab during the militancy years, written in Hindi. The atmosphere of fear, moral ambiguity, and trauma is palpable. It's not an easy read, but it's a crucial one, showing how the short story form can document a society's rawest wounds. The prose is direct and unflinching. It stays with you long after you've finished, like a shadow.
New readers should absolutely begin with Jhumpa Lahiri. 'Interpreter of Maladies' is a masterclass in the short story form. Her focus is often on the Indian diaspora experience, the quiet tensions between tradition and new worlds. What makes her essential is her emotional precision; she captures those unspoken moments of disconnect or longing with devastating clarity. The prose is clean, elegant, and never showy. It's contemporary, relatable, and gives you a immediate sense of the power a short story can hold. You'll finish each tale feeling like you've lived a whole novel's worth of emotion.
I’d advise a new reader to avoid jumping straight into very dense, allegorical, or formally experimental collections right away. You might get discouraged. Get a few easy wins under your belt with a Lahiri or a Narayan to build your appreciation for the form’s strengths, then tackle the more challenging stuff.
