Happy ending? Not really, no. It's more of a 'stop fighting' ending. Polyphemus just sort of... gives up. After all the rage and the violence, there's this exhausted quiet. The sky clears, the sea calms, and he's just there, alone with his sheep again. It's peaceful, I guess, but it feels less like happiness and more like defeat worn smooth by time.

Some readers call it bittersweet, but to me it's just bitter with a side of 'what was the point of all that?' Maybe that's the point the author was making, but it left me feeling a bit empty, like the story just ran out of steam instead of concluding.

I read it years ago and honestly had to look it up again. From what I recall, it ends on a note of melancholy acceptance rather than joy. The protagonist achieves a form of peace, but it's a solitude bought with great loss. It's not a triumphant finale.

Ending Guesser Receptionist
The fate of the 'hero' in 'Epic Polyphemus' isn't so much about happiness in the traditional sense. The entire book is a brutal deconstruction of what a hero's journey even means in a morally grey world. That final chapter, with the character staring out at the ruined coastline after everything they've sacrificed, feels deliberately ambiguous. It's a Pyrrhic victory at best. They got what they were after, but the cost was everyone and everything they cared about. I found it profoundly sad, but also weirdly fitting—trying to graft a happy ending onto that story would have felt like a betrayal of its themes.

A friend argued with me that the ending was hopeful because the character is finally free from the cycles of vengeance, but I don't buy it. The silence and isolation in that last scene is crushing. You're left wondering if 'freedom' was worth the hollow shell they've become. It's the kind of ending that gnaws at you for days.
