A really unique one is 'Bag of Bones'. It's marketed as a ghost story, and it is, but at its core it's a grief-stricken novel about a widowed writer. The supernatural elements are intertwined with his mourning process and a historical mystery. The emotional horror of loss outweighs the ghostly scares. It's a slower, more atmospheric read with some of his most beautiful prose. It blurs the line perfectly.

If you like stories about writing and obsession, 'Misery' is technically a thriller, but the horror is entirely human. It's a masterclass in suspense, exploring the twisted relationship between a writer and his "number one fan." There are no ghosts or demons, just two people in a secluded house. It's brutal, psychological, and utterly gripping. It showcases King's ability to generate unbearable tension from a simple, realistic premise.

I'd argue 'Needful Things' is less supernatural horror and more a dark comedy of manners about human greed. The devilish proprietor, Leland Gaunt, simply provides the temptation; the townspeople destroy themselves. It's a sprawling, often funny, and brutal examination of petty desires and community corruption. The horror is in seeing neighbors turn on each other for trivial gains. It's a social satire with a supernatural catalyst.

Honestly, 'Christine' is often lumped in with horror, but it's really a dark coming-of-age story about obsession and toxic friendship. The supernatural car is almost a metaphor for Arnie's transformation and Dennis's loss of his best friend. The real terror is watching someone you love change into a stranger. If you look past the possessed vehicle, it's a poignant tale about adolescence and corruption. King's characterization is top-notch here.

Which short story horror collections by non Stephen King authors are essential

Last one from me: 'A Collapse of Horses' by Brian Evenson. The title story is a masterpiece of unreliable narration and creeping dread. Is the narrator going mad, or is reality collapsing? You never get a firm answer, and that’s the horror. Evenson is a genius at crafting these tight, minimalist nightmares that leave you questioning everything. It’s unsettling in a deep, philosophical way. If you like horror that lives in the ambiguity, that follows you around after reading, Evenson is your essential author. Start here.

'Duma Key' is an underrated gem, in my opinion. It's a slower, more atmospheric novel about a man rediscovering his life and an artistic talent after a terrible accident, on a remote Florida key. The horror creeps in through the art itself. It's a haunting, beautifully written story about trauma, creativity, and things buried in the past. The payoff is incredibly eerie and satisfying.

Where should I start with Stephen King if I avoid horror stories?

The collaboration 'The Plant' aside, his pure humor is often in his nonfiction and intros. But 'The Dark Half' is a meta-thriller about a writer whose pseudonym comes to life. It's violent and has horror elements, but at its core, it's a darkly funny satire of the publishing industry and an author's struggle with his own creativity. The concept is almost a joke taken to a terrifying extreme. If you enjoy stories about writing and the creative process with a nasty edge, this might work. George Stark is a fantastic, over-the-top villain.
