I’m just sitting here nodding along. So many books to add to my list. I finally started 'The Fifth Season' because of threads like this, and you’re all so right.

Historical fantasy with magic? Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell' by Susanna Clarke is the definitive work. It imagines an alternate Regency England where theoretical magicians are stunned when a practical magician reappears. The magic is scholarly, bizarre, and deeply tied to English folklore and Faerie. Clarke’s footnotes create a whole academic history of magic. The magic isn’t flashy; it’s often slow, strange, and has terrible unintended consequences. The relationship between the two magicians and the ominous figure of the Gentleman with the Thistledown Hair is mesmerizing. It’s a masterpiece of tone and detail.

Older series like Raymond E. Feist's 'Riftwar Cycle' might feel a bit tropey now, but the magic is classic and satisfying. The differentiation between Lesser and Greater Path magic, the clashes between Midkemian and Tsurani magical traditions, Pug’s evolution from kitchen boy to powerhouse... it’s a foundational 'mage’s journey' story. The magic feels powerful and world-altering. If you enjoy seeing a character start from nothing and grow into a magician of legendary stature across decades and multiple series, this massive saga delivers that in spades.

What are the best books set in a magical world?

Oh, where do I even begin with magical worlds? One of my all-time favorites has to be 'The Name of the Wind' by Patrick Rothfuss. The way he crafts the University and the magic system called Sympathy is just mind-blowing. It feels so real, like you could almost study it yourself. And then there's Kvothe's journey—full of music, mystery, and a ton of heartbreak. The prose is so lyrical that I often find myself rereading passages just to savor the words. Another gem is 'Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell' by Susanna Clarke. It’s set in an alternate England where magic is returning, and the writing style mimics 19th-century literature, which gives it such a unique charm. The footnotes alone are a treasure trove of whimsy and hidden lore. It’s slow-paced but totally worth it for the rich world-building and dry humor. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve recommended this to friends who love historical fantasy.
