Finally, don't neglect fanfiction. Some of the most inventive takes on detective mages are in Harry Potter fanfics that deconstruct the world. Stories that ask how the Aurors actually work, how magical forensics would function, or what a cold-case unit in the Department of Mysteries would look like. The best of them treat magic as a rigorous system and build compelling mysteries within it. You just have to sift through a lot to find the gems.

Sometimes I think the 'detective' part gets lost. The protagonist stops investigating and just gets into magical brawls every other chapter. I want the slow burn of collecting clues, interviewing witnesses (mundane and magical), hitting dead ends. The magic should complicate the investigation, not replace it.

My ultimate comfort re-read in this niche is still 'Three Parts Dead' by Max Gladstone. The 'detectives' are a junior necromancer-lawyer and a priest of a dead god, investigating the death of a deity that powered a city. The magic system is a bizarre blend of contract law, soul-stuff, and theology. Solving the crime means auditing divine energy contracts and arguing metaphysical precedent. It's uniquely brilliant.

Okay, so picture a setting where magic is illegal and the only ones allowed to use it are state-sanctioned inquisitors hunting their own kind. That's the core of 'The Justice of Kings' by Richard Swan. The 'detective' is a traveling justice who is also a terrifyingly powerful magician, and the story is told from his clerk's perspective. It's less about a whodunit and more about the moral corrosion of absolute power, wrapped in a grim, politically tense mystery. It gets dark, fair warning.

How do fantasy mystery books blend magic systems with whodunits?

Magic can utterly ruin a classic mystery if it's just a 'solve-it-all' button. A good author has to build constraints from page one—maybe certain spells leave a trace, or using powerful magic near a crime scene has catastrophic side effects. That way, the magical world's own logic provides the limitations. Otherwise, you're just reading a story where the detective could have ended it in chapter two with a simple truth spell, and that's no fun for anyone.
