Consider 'The Strain' trilogy by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan. Dr. Ephraim Goodweather starts as a classic hero—a CDC doctor fighting an outbreak. But as the vampire plague overwhelms society, he becomes increasingly desperate, paranoid, and willing to abandon his ethics and family in his single-minded crusade. His descent into a bitter, often ineffective anti-hero is the core of the trilogy's gray area. Meanwhile, the ancient vampire hunter, Abraham Setrakian, is fueled by a vengeance that borders on obsession, and his methods are brutally pragmatic. The books argue that in an apocalyptic war against a hive-mind enemy, traditional heroism is a luxury that gets you killed, and the 'winners' are those stained by the fight.
I'm just sitting here nodding along. So many of these are on my TBR pile already, and now you've added like ten more. My wallet and my free time are weeping, but in a good way.

A TASTE OF TEMPTATION: Vampire King And His Hybrid Bride

2.4K
A ruthless vampire king, a hidden hybrid, and a centuries-old secret ignite a forbidden love amidst a brewing war.
Chained and rejected by my pack, I thought I was just an ordinary werewolf. But the Vampire King's rescue reveals my true nature and a shocking past. Now, as shifters and vampires clash, I must choose between my heritage and my destiny.
Will I surrender to the King's dark desires, or forge my own path? In this world of ancient power struggles, one thing is certain: my blood will decide the fate of all.
“Why does everyone assume I need a tragic backstory to justify what I am?” Adrian said, strolling slowly toward me like he had all the time in the world.
His eyes locked on mine as he continued, “Oh no, honey. It isn't because mummy dearest died giving birth to me. Or because dear old dad was too busy to tuck me in at night"
He stopped when he was directly in front of me. So close that his tall frame was towering intimidatingly over me.
I lifted my chin stubbornly to look him in the eye, refusing to cower.
He smirked at that, his hand going to swipe a stray strand of hair from my face.
“Some of us,” he murmured, “are not broken.”
His eyes darkened.
“Some of us are just simply… evil.”

I was dragged to the execution block in chains, accused of being a monster the world had erased.
Then the Alpha's wolf claimed me as mate and forced him to halt the execution.
In a world where hybrids were hunted to extinction, I was the last mistake left alive. The last thing Lucien Dreadmoor wanted was his mate being the single weapon that could completely wipe out wolves from existence. The bond tied us together anyway, trapping me in his keep, his rules, his control.
He called it protection.
I called it a cage.
As war stirs at the borders and a vampire prince begins circling, whispers spread that my blood could start another war… or end it.
The Alpha wants to break the bond.
The Vampire wants to claim me.
And somewhere between fate and freedom, I must decide which monster I am willing to stand beside… and which one I am willing to become.

This author once failed as a heroine… and returned as something entirely different.
Not as a savior.
But as the villain.
And she didn’t come back empty-handed.
She brought secrets.
She brought sins.
She brought a story that was never meant to be read.
Sinners & Saints is not just a collection of dark romance stories—
It is a confession.
A warning.
And a door best left unopened.
Within these pages lie twisted love stories where desire and destruction walk hand in hand, and every choice comes with a cost.
So the question is simple:
Will you turn away…
or step inside anyway?
Set in New York in the 1800s, where charming salons exist alongside dark alleyways, an exceptional independent young woman, Eleanor Blake, comes face-to-face with an enigmatic gentleman of magnetic charm, Adrian Velmont. But Adrian is a vampire, haunted by centuries of solitude, and Eleanor comes from a lineage of vampire hunters. As love begins to bloom, Eleanor learns shocking secrets about herself and Adrian from her father, a ruthless hunter. Now, she must make the choice between the love she bears and the duty she must confront- an ever-growing threat marked by vampires, led by Isolde, and a family that considers Adrian a danger. In a dark swirl of battles and betrayals, Eleanor and Adrian fight against a fate that sets out to doom them. A passionate, mysterious love story where romance defies death.
“Your father’s debt is now yours to pay,” he said. The words were quiet, but they hit like a hammer. “Whether you like it or not, it’s either you serve me or you die.”
Santa Griffin has always lived life on his own terms, bold, flirtatious, and unapologetically reckless. But when his father is found dead under suspicious circumstances, Santa is dragged into the shadowy world of the Otho family, the most powerful clan of vampires in the city. There, he learns the truth: his father’s debt has fallen onto him, and Lord Perth Otho demands repayment in the most terrifying way possible.
Forced into servitude, Santa becomes Perth’s personal slave. But what begins as a cruel punishment twists into something far more dangerous. Perth toys with him mercilessly, savoring his defiance, but beneath the ruthless control lies an attraction neither can deny.
As tensions rise, Santa is caught in a deadly web. Perth is bound by duty to marry the pureblood ed vampire, Xedra, a union that could secure power for the vampire elite. But when vampire hunters launch a brutal attack, Santa risks everything to save the very man he swore to hate, setting into motion a chain of events that will change everything.
But when the hunters strike and their leader is revealed to be Santa’s long-lost mother, vengeance and blood ties collide. Caught between the woman who gave him life and the vampire who now owns his heart, Santa must decide where he truly belongs, because in a world ruled by darkness, love itself could be his undoing.
In the city ruled by vampires, Pure Omegas don't live long.
They disappear.
For twenty years, Kael has survived by becoming invisible. He hides beneath oversized hoodies, works the night shift at a blood clinic, and swallows illegal blocker pills to suppress the scent that could get him auctioned off to the highest bidder.
Then one expired pill destroys everything.
When his blockers fail inside a crowded subway station, the intoxicating scent of fresh lilies sends nearby vampires into a feeding frenzy. As bloodthirsty predators close in, Kael is certain his life is over.
Instead...
He is saved by the one monster everyone fears.
Lucien Vale, the Blood Sovereign, is the strongest Alpha vampire in the Upper District. Cold. Untouchable. Merciless. Rather than hand Kael over to the High Council, Lucien offers him a single choice.
Sign a protection contract... or die.
Kael chooses survival.
But the contract awakens an ancient blood oath neither of them meant to invoke, a forbidden bond that ties their blood, instincts, and fates together beyond law or choice.
Now every vampire in the city is hunting the rare Omega hidden inside Lucien's penthouse. The High Council wants to dissect him. Rival Houses want to claim him. And the ruthless Sovereign who swore only to protect him is slowly losing control of the instincts that demand he scent, mark, and keep Kael forever.
But Kael has spent his entire life fighting to stay free.
He refuses to become anyone's possession...
...even if destiny insists he has belonged to Lucien for centuries.
We're forgetting about the classics of weird fiction. Clark Ashton Smith's stories are full of amoral wizards, decadent emperors, and seekers of forbidden knowledge who meet terrible, poetic ends. The morality is often cosmic and indifferent. Try 'The Empire of the Necromancers' or 'The City of the Singing Flame.' The 'heroes' are usually just the viewpoint characters navigating a world of sublime horror and wonder. Their grayness is in their ambition and curiosity, which often doom them. It's a different, older school of thought, where morality is a human concern in an inhuman universe.
