I found a very clean, professional-sounding version on LibriVox. It's a volunteer project, so the quality varies, but for this book, a slightly less polished, almost earnest reading kind of worked for me. It felt raw. Just search the title on their site. It's free, which feels appropriate for the material, honestly.

Man, that's a tough one to listen to. I got my copy from Audible a few years back. The performance is... harrowing. The narrator does this thing where his voice just empties out during the more horrific realizations, and it sticks with you. I tried listening on a long drive and had to turn it off; it's not background noise, it demands your full attention in a way that's almost physically oppressive.

Check the usual suspects: Audible, Google Play, Libro.fm. It's not always in stock everywhere because it's older, but it's definitely out there. Sometimes smaller audiobook retailers have it when the big platforms don't.

Actually, my library's digital service was the easiest for me. I'd been wanting to read 'Johnny Got His Gun' for a while, but the subject is so heavy that I thought the audio format might help me process it. Hoopla had it available right away without any holds, which was a relief. The narrator's flat, almost detached delivery really amplifies the horror of the story, in my opinion. It becomes this relentless internal monologue that you can't escape, which is exactly the point.

I sometimes see it pop up on Audible, but it's one of those classics that seems to cycle in and out of the Plus Catalog. If you're not in a rush, it might be worth waiting to see if it becomes a free selection for members again. Otherwise, checking your local library's online resources is definitely the first step; I think a lot of people forget that's even an option these days.
