Archive of Our Own is fantastic for those kinds of crossovers. The tagging system is your absolute best friend here—you can filter for 'Avengers Crossover' and then add tags like 'Worldbuilding' or 'Alternate Universe - Worldbuilding' to narrow it down. A lot of writers there are meticulous about constructing new realities, especially in massive crossovers like 'Avengers/Marvel' meets something like 'The Witcher' or 'The Lord of the Rings'.

Some of my favorite finds involve the Avengers getting dumped into a completely different magic system and having to figure out how their tech and powers even function. It forces the author to do some heavy lifting on the rules, which usually leads to really intricate plots. Just be prepared to sift; the really detailed ones are often longer fics that update slowly.

For a specific rec, check out 'A Song of Thunder and Stark'—it’s a crossover with 'A Song of Ice and Fire' that spends chapters just on the political fallout of Tony Stark showing up in Westeros. The tags there are spot-on.

Honestly? I’ve had better luck on dedicated forums than the big archives for super-specific worldbuilding crossovers. SpaceBattles and Sufficient Velocity have these massive, ongoing threads where writers collaboratively build out these insane scenarios, like the Avengers ending up in the world of 'Mass Effect' and the discussions are half about the tech compatibility and cultural clashes. The prose isn't always polished, but the sheer volume of thought put into the mechanics is unmatched.

It’s a different vibe from a neatly packaged story on AO3. You get to see the brainstorming in real time, which can be more satisfying if you’re really into the 'how' and 'why' of the crossover working.

Don't overlook fanfiction.net for older gems. Its search is awful, but if you use Google with site:fanfiction.net and keywords like 'Avengers crossover worldbuilding detailed', you can dig up some foundational fics from years back. The culture there tended to favor longer explanatory author's notes and appendices, which sometimes meant the worldbuilding got laid out very explicitly, almost like a wiki entry within the story. It’s a mixed bag, but when you hit a good one, it feels like discovering a blueprint.

What are the best Avengers fanfic crossover stories with other fandoms?

The absolute peak of Avengers crossovers for me will always be the massive wave of stories that mashed them up with the MCU's own 'Sherlock' reboot. Not the Conan Doyle version, but specifically the BBC series with Benedict Cumberbatch. The mental gymnastics writers went through to fuse Sherlock's deductive genius with Tony Stark's technological brilliance, while also throwing in the John Watson/Steve Rogers dynamic, produced some incredibly smart fic. I binged a series where Sherlock was Tony's secret half-brother and Mycroft was a high-level SHIELD consultant. It wasn't just about the fights; the real tension came from Sherlock deconstructing the team's interpersonal dramas in that brutally analytical way. A weirdly specific niche I adore is Avengers/'The Fast and the Fious' blends. Sounds ridiculous, right? But there's a subset of fics that treat Dominic Toretto's 'family' philosophy as a straight-faced, street-level counterpart to the Avengers' world-saving teamwork. I read one where the team needs to retrieve an artifact from a secure convoy, and they have to enlist Dom's crew because their driving is literally a superpower the Avengers lack. The culture clash between Steve's old-school honor and Dom's 'ride or die' code was hilarious and unexpectedly heartfelt. It shouldn't work, but in the hands of writers who love both, it becomes this celebration of found family from opposite ends of the spectrum.
