At this point, I have a dog-eared paperback copy of 'Double Standards' from 1984 that I use as a reference point. The list of her other books printed in the front is a time capsule. I just follow that order for her early works. For later books, I rely on the lists others have mentioned. Sometimes the physical artifact in your hand is the best guide, even if it's incomplete. It feels like holding a piece of literary history.

For a visual person, I made a spreadsheet. I pulled data from her publisher's backlist page, her (now static) official website via the Internet Archive, and a couple of fan sites to triangulate. I have columns for series name, book title, publication year, and internal chronological order if it differs. It sounds obsessive, but for an author with as many interconnected books as Lindsey, it's the only way I could see the whole picture. I'd be happy to share the Google Sheet link if you DM me—it has the Malory, Sherring Cross, and Ly-San-Ter lineages sorted.

I'm a new reader, and this thread is overwhelming. Maybe I'll just start with 'Man of My Dreams' since it's a standalone and see if I like her writing style first before committing to a 10-book family saga. Does that make me a heretic? Probably. But life's too short to research for three hours before reading page one of a book.

I found a PDF on a forum that was a fan-made reading order guide. It had color-coded boxes for each series and arrows showing the connections. It was a work of art. Someone put dozens of hours into making it visually intuitive. That's the kind of resource that lives on my desktop. Forums (the old-school, topic-specific ones) are still the best place to find these labor-of-love fan resources that aren't designed for ad revenue but pure helpfulness.

One hundred stories.

Countless reasons to blow caution to the wind.
I’d say her heroines are the real draw. They’re often surprisingly spirited and clever within the confines of the genre. Amy Malory in 'The Magic of You' is a fantastic example. She goes after what she wants. So maybe pick a book praised for its heroine.
The covers often spoil the setting! A man in a cravat on the cover? Regency. A man with an open shirt and a sword? Pirate or medieval. A Stetson? Western. Use that as a quick guide if you're trying to follow a theme rather than an order.
Sometimes you just need a cowboy. So scan your list or your shelf for the books with the cowboy covers and read those in a row. It's a very visual, intuitive way to group her work without overthinking internal chronology. The cover art, for all its clichés, is an honest guide to the sub-genre inside.
Interesting question, because it makes you realize how long her career was. Over 35 years of publishing. The order is a timeline of romance publishing itself. Early books like 'Fires of Winter' are classic Viking romps. By the time you get to 'The Heir' (2000), the sensibilities are more modern.
I'd recommend not reading in strict order unless you're a scholar or completist. Pick a series. The Malory-Anderson books are the most beloved for a reason. Read those in the recommended series order, which you can find on any romance blog. That'll give you the best experience without getting overwhelmed by the sheer number of titles.
The comparison to newer historical romance authors is stark. Almost every new release from popular authors today gets a simultaneous audiobook launch. Lindsey's backlog exists in a weird pre-digital limbo. It creates a perception gap for new readers discovering her; they might assume the lack of audio means the books aren't popular or worth reading, which is absolutely not the case. It's a legacy problem.
Think of it like exploring a music genre. You wouldn't necessarily start with an artist's first album. Start with her greatest hits compilation. That's the Malory series, specifically books 1, 3, and 4. They represent the most polished, beloved, and definitive version of her sound. After you love those, you can go back to the early, rougher cuts or the experimental side projects.
Honestly, the expectation of finding current or even backlist bestselling author's books for free online is a bit of a misconception. Publishers use free first books as a loss leader for new series, but for established juggernauts like Lindsey, the strategy is different. The value is in the consistent sales.
