Huh. I never consciously sought these out, but now that you mention it, most of my favorite short stories have a twist. Maybe I just like that structure. I should probably figure out why that is before I dive into another anthology... or maybe I'll just dive in and figure it out later.

I mix my mystery shorts with horror. A good horror-mystery, like many of M.R. James's ghost stories, has a twist that's both a solution and a damnation. Discovering the truth doesn't save the protagonist; it dooms them. That tonal shift from mystery to terror is the ultimate twist for me.

Isn't the whole point of a short mystery the twist? It feels redundant to specify. Maybe the better question is where to find collections where the twists feel earned and not cheap. That's the real hunt.

Don't sleep on genre-blending anthologies! Look for titles like 'Cosmic Horror Mystery' or 'Sci-Fi Noir'. The twists in those collections come from left field because they're playing with two sets of rules. I found a fantastic one called 'Shadow Over Baker Street' that mashes up Sherlock Holmes with Lovecraftian elements; the endings are mind-bending in the best way.

For a purely classic approach, you can't go wrong with the Queens of Crime. Agatha Christie's short stories, collected in volumes like 'The Listerdale Mystery', are fantastic. While some twists are of their time, the construction is impeccable. Penguin Modern Classics often has nice editions of these, and they're frequently on sale for Kindle.

If you're craving bite-sized mysteries that pack a punch, I've got a few gems to share! My absolute favorite is 'The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes'—classic, clever, and endlessly quotable. The way Arthur Conan Doyle weaves tension into short formats still blows my mind. For something more modern, 'Poirot’s Early Cases' by Agatha Christie is a delight; each story feels like unwrapping a chocolate with a surprise center.
For Japanese twists, Edogawa Rampo’s 'Japanese Tales of Mystery & Imagination' offers eerie, atmospheric puzzles. And don’t overlook 'The Red Pocket Book of Mystery Stories'—anthologies like these introduce you to diverse voices in the genre. Honestly, short mysteries are perfect for commutes or bedtime; they linger in your head long after the last page.
