Can't believe no one's shouted out 'The Expanse' series, starting with 'Leviathan Wakes'. It's the perfect bridge between hard sci-fi (real physics!) and gripping detective/space opera. The core theme is humanity taking its tribalism and politics with it to the stars. It feels like a very plausible near-future, warts and all. The Belters as an exploited underclass is a devastatingly clear metaphor.
Gotta represent the time travel paradox genre. 'The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle' by Stuart Turton is a groundhog-day-meets-body-hopping murder mystery in a country manor. The futuristic/supernatural mechanism forces the protagonist to experience the same day from wildly different perspectives. The theme is the subjectivity of truth and the impossibility of knowing a whole story from a single point of view. It's a puzzle box of a book.
My list would prioritize accessibility and sheer enjoyment. 'The Calculating Stars' by Mary Robinette Kowal—an alternate history where a meteorite accelerates the space race and a female mathematician battles sexism to become an astronaut. It's thrilling, smart, and introduces themes of historical contingency and fighting systemic barriers in a way that's incredibly engaging. Sometimes the best future is one we re-imagine from the past.
Don't forget the joy of a great premise executed perfectly. 'The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August' by Claire North. A man is reborn again and again into the same life with all his memories intact. The theme is the weight of knowledge, the frustration of changing history, and what one person might do across centuries. It's a brilliant spin on immortality that feels fresh and deeply human.
