Fortunato Depero, an Italian Futurist artist, left a fascinating imprint on modern anime art styles, though his name rarely comes up in discussions. His vibrant, chaotic compositions and obsession with movement align perfectly with the hyper-expressive visuals in anime. Depero's use of fractured perspectives and kaleidoscopic color palettes can be spotted in shows like 'Dead Leaves' or 'Redline,' where the world feels like it’s in constant motion. His typography work, with its playful, jagged lettering, even echoes the onomatopoeic bursts in manga and anime sound effects.
Beyond visuals, Depero’s philosophy of embracing technology and speed mirrors anime’s frequent themes of mechanization and futurism. Series like 'Neon Genesis Evangelion' or 'Ghost in the Shell' owe a debt to Futurism’s celebration of the machine age, something Depero championed. His stage designs, which blurred the line between art and performance, also parallel anime’s theatrical flair—think of the over-the-top battles in 'JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure,' where every pose feels like a Depero sculpture come to life. While he wasn’t an animator, his ideas about breaking conventions seeped into anime’s DNA, encouraging artists to prioritize emotion and dynamism over realism.
Depero’s influence on anime art is like a hidden thread woven into the fabric of the medium. His Futurist background emphasized energy and abstraction, which anime later embraced wholeheartedly. Take the way characters in 'FLCL' or 'Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann' explode with exaggerated emotions—Depero’s posters did the same with their swirling, almost violent compositions. Even the way anime plays with typography, like the bold, angular text in 'Attack on Titan’s' opening sequences, feels like a nod to his graphic design work.
What’s really cool is how Depero’s love for industrial themes pops up in anime’s cyberpunk subgenre. The cluttered, neon-lit cities in 'Akira' or 'Psycho-Pass' could easily be illustrations from one of his Futurist manifestos. His legacy isn’t about direct imitation but about inspiring a mindset where art isn’t afraid to be loud, fast, and a little chaotic—just like anime at its best.
Fortunato Depero's impact on modern anime art styles is subtle but undeniable. His work with the Futurist movement in the early 20th century emphasized bold, dynamic compositions and vibrant colors, elements that resonate deeply with contemporary anime aesthetics. Depero's love for geometric shapes and exaggerated forms can be seen in the stylized character designs of many anime, where sharp angles and dramatic silhouettes are common. His influence extends to the way anime backgrounds often incorporate abstract patterns and kinetic energy, mirroring Depero's own avant-garde posters and designs. While not directly cited by anime creators, his spirit of innovation and visual experimentation paved the way for the genre's willingness to break traditional artistic boundaries.

"Who hurt you?" Antonio's deep voice cut through the air like daggers.
Isabella lowered her eyes timidly, holding on to her wounded arm.
"It was Master Pedro." Mario, his bodyguard, answered instead.
Antonio said nothing more. He uncrossed his legs and grabbed the large butcher knife on the table.
"Wait here." He murmured to Isabella.
He stormed into the gambling parlor, his face set in a deep scowl, his eyes burning with rage, his grip tight on the knife.
When Pedro spotted him, he grinned and waved.
"Antonio, have you come to join us?"
Antonio marched up to him, grabbed his hand and chopped it off. Pedro's painful scream echoed all over the gambling room.
"Don't touch what is mine!"

Fortunato Depero's influence is such a fascinating niche. While direct adaptations of his work are rare, his avant-garde Futurist designs subtly echo in shows like 'Mob Psycho 100'—especially its abstract background art and chaotic energy scenes. Depero’s bold geometric patterns and dynamic compositions also remind me of 'Kyousougiga,' where surreal visuals dominate. Even 'Tatami Galaxy' plays with similar experimental aesthetics, though it’s more inspired by broader modernist movements. If you love Depero’s vibe, checking out these anime might give you that same electrifying visual rush.
