For purely organizational syncing—keeping your library and collections the same across devices—Google Play Books and Kindle are top. For progress syncing, they’re also top. But if you want to annotate and highlight, and have those sync too, Kindle is the strongest. My highlights and notes appear on all my devices and are even accessible on the web. Google Play Books does this too, but I find its note-taking interface less polished. If you’re a student or someone who actively engages with text, this is a huge factor. The free app becomes a powerful study tool when all your annotations are always with you.

I wish Goodreads would properly integrate with Kindle or other apps to auto-sync progress. The manual update is a chore. Imagine finishing a chapter on your Kindle and having your Goodreads status auto-update. That's the dream. The technology is obviously there; it's a business deal problem. Until then, our progress exists in separate silos: one for reading, one for social.

Aldiko is a classic, but the older Aldiko Book Reader (not Aldiko Next) doesn't do cloud sync in the free version. You'd need the paid upgrade for that. So, scratch that one off your list if sync is a must-have for no cost.

Do apps to read free books sync progress across multiple devices?

I’ve tested a bunch of free reading apps to see if they sync progress seamlessly. Apps like 'Libby' and 'Kindle' (yes, the free version with public domain books) do a fantastic job of syncing your last read page, highlights, and even notes across devices. You just need to log in with the same account, and it updates almost instantly. However, not all free apps offer this feature. Some, like 'Google Play Books' for free titles, require manual syncing or don’t always update in real-time. I’ve noticed that apps tied to larger ecosystems (Amazon, Google) tend to handle syncing better than standalone ones. If cross-device reading is a priority, stick to apps with cloud integration—it’s a game-changer for binge-readers like me.

For public domain classics, the Standard Ebooks project is amazing. They make beautifully formatted, free EPUBs. If you download one and put it in Google Play Books, you now have a gorgeous, synced copy of 'Pride and Prejudice' or 'Dracula' on all your devices. It's a fantastic combination of high-quality, free content and a free, syncing reading platform. Makes diving into the classics incredibly easy and pleasant.
