What's the obsession with PDFs? They're clunky. EPUB is the way to go. Most ereaders and apps handle it perfectly. If a site only offers PDF for a classic novel, it's a sign it might be a low-effort scan. The good archives always offer EPUB.

Honestly, I just use my local library's digital app, like Libby or OverDrive. They have tons of classic ebooks and audiobooks for free, with no download limits, and the files are guaranteed safe. It requires a library card, but that's free too. It's the most sustainable and ethical way to read digitally.

Bartleby.com was one of the early giants. It's still online, hosting a vast collection of verse, fiction, and nonfiction. The interface feels a bit old-school, but the content is solid and reliable. You can read online, and many texts have a 'Print/PDF' option.

Wait, are we talking about sites where you can legally download the files to keep, or just read online? There's a difference. Some sites only allow online reading, which is fine unless you're going off-grid. Always check the terms.

For something a bit different, the University of Adelaide's eBooks@Adelaide was a fantastic site (now archived and hosted by the University of Adelaide Library). The collection is still accessible, with beautifully formatted classics. It's a quieter, academic-feeling archive.

Honestly? Your local public library's website. Most are connected to digital services like Hoopla or Libby, which have huge collections of public domain classics in professional ebook formats. The PDFs or EPUBs you get are high-quality, and you're supporting a public institution. It's the most underrecommended method. You need a card, but that's free too.
Don't sleep on the Kindle Store itself. A huge number of classic titles are permanently free there (Amazon sets the price to $0.00 for public domain works). You can 'buy' them for free and they sync effortlessly to all your devices. The editions are sometimes bare-bones, but they work. It's the ultimate in convenience if you're in the Kindle ecosystem. No transferring files, no worrying about format compatibility. Just search, click 'buy now' for $0.00, and it's in your library. It's my lazy, go-to method for most well-known classics.
finding free PDFs is a game-changer. Project Gutenberg is my go-to—it’s a treasure trove with thousands of public domain classics like 'Pride and Prejudice' and 'Moby Dick.' The interface is straightforward, and you can download in multiple formats, including PDF. Open Library is another favorite; it’s like a digital version of your local library, where you can borrow classics for free. I also stumbled upon ManyBooks recently, which has a sleek design and curated lists. For obscure titles, Google Books sometimes offers full PDFs of older works. Just search with 'filetype:pdf' to filter results. These sites are perfect for book lovers on a budget.
The thrill of the hunt is part of the fun. You start looking for 'Pride and Prejudice' and end up discovering 'The Beetle' by Richard Marsh, a bestselling horror novel from 1897 that rivalled 'Dracula.' These sites are full of forgotten bestsellers and curiosities. The lack of a commercial algorithm pushing you toward predictable choices means you stumble upon things purely by chance or through curious browsing. It's how I found some of my favorite obscure reads.
