My favorite angle is when writers explore Friede's potential guilt or sense of responsibility. She's the adult in the situation, even if Amethio is a capable antagonist. Emotional growth for her could involve confronting whether her breezy attitude inadvertently dismisses the very real pressure he's under from the Explorers. For him, growth might start with envy—seeing someone who's free and accomplished in a way his path won't allow—and maturing into a choice, not just blind obedience. It's a tricky dynamic to write without making either character OOC, but when done right, it feels earned. They don't need to end up together romantically for the growth to matter; sometimes just understanding a former enemy is a huge leap forward. I read one where they had a ceasefire to deal with a common threat, and the whole story was just them being painfully polite and professional, but you could see the gears turning in their heads.
It's all about friction leading to change. He's cold duty, she's warm passion. When they collide, parts of them chip off. She learns her optimism needs a backbone; he learns his mission needs a heart. Simple, but effective when writers focus on the small moments that force that abrasion.
I'm gonna be a contrarian and say I'm kinda over the super introspective, slow-burn takes on this ship. Sometimes the emotional growth is in the fighting! They're rivals, they clash, they have wildly different methods. A fic where they're forced to work together and they just argue constantly, but through that, they refine their own beliefs. Amethio has to verbalize why his rigid way matters, and Friede has to defend her optimism. That conflict forces self-reflection. Growth isn't always soft and quiet; it can be loud and frustrating. You come out of it with a sharper understanding of yourself because someone kept poking at your weak spots. I want more fics where the emotional payoff is them respecting each other's competence after a brutal showdown, not holding hands under a sunset.
Honestly? I think a lot of fics miss the potential here. People latch onto the 'older woman, younger guy' dynamic or the mentor-protege thing from the 'Pokémon Horizons' anime, and they just make it pure angst or immediate romance. The real emotional growth I look for is in the quiet un-learning. Friede's this cheerful, accomplished adult, but she had to rebuild herself after whatever past she had. Amethio's all rigid and duty-bound. So a story where they slowly dismantle each other's defenses? That's gold.
Instead of big declarations, it's Friede casually sharing a terrible meal she cooked, breaking her own 'perfect captain' image, and Amethio realizing his worldview has no category for 'admirable yet flawed.' His growth isn't about becoming happy-go-lucky; it's about learning nuance. Her growth is about accepting that her past pain doesn't disqualify her from guiding someone else. The best fic I read had them stranded, fixing the airship, and the emotional climax was Amethio admitting he was afraid of failing his mission, and Friede just nodding like she understood the weight of that fear. No hug, no kiss, just shared silence. That hit harder than any confession scene.

The Legend of Amaryah
Miesha

3.0K
Amaryah is an adventurous young lady of an elite clan well-known for cultivating successful followers. For fools who didn't know any better, Amaryah is nothing but a failure. But for people who met her face to face, they know she is never short of power nor is she inferior to others. Even without the aid of an elemental spirit, her techniques and spiritual level are high enough to take any user on one-on-one.
However some people may be awed and amazed, hate and displeasure are always inevitable. People who harbor enough hatred would do anything to drag someone down.
So once the origins of Amaryah and the history of her family were revealed, she ended up getting executed and burned like how her ancestors met their demise.
But this is too abrupt of an ending, and there's a reason why legends are called legends.
Amelia Hutchinson was always different. Her life was different. Xikoth, the King of Hell, a dark fae, was after her. "It won’t fit," I whispered, my breath hitching as he leaned closer, his lips grazing my ear.
His voice was dark, commanding, and impossibly seductive. "You have no idea what your body is capable of.
Relax and let me teach you."
Alessia never believed in fairy tales. Life had taught her that happy endings were a cruel illusion. Struggling to care for her sick mother, she’s spent years working dead-end jobs, her sharp tongue and stubborn nature ensuring she never stayed anywhere for long. Then he walked in.
Luca Romano is a man of few words but commands a room with his presence. The whispers about him are conflicting—billionaire, recluse, criminal mastermind. Women throw themselves at his feet, but his cold, detached demeanor makes one thing clear: he doesn’t care about anyone. Yet when Alessia crosses his path, everything changes.
What begins as a business arrangement—a desperate woman agreeing to play the role of his date for one night—quickly spirals into something much darker. Luca’s possessiveness knows no bounds, and Alessia finds herself drawn into a world of power, danger, and unrelenting desire.
But Luca has secrets as deep as his scars, and his love is anything but gentle. He’s a man consumed by vengeance, his methods ruthless, his emotions raw. Alessia thought she could handle his intensity, but the closer she gets, the more she realizes there’s no escaping him.
He doesn’t just want her. He owns her.

She was supposed to be just a pawn in the games of throne that I played.
A nanny for my Damian and perhaps also a little entertainment in my bedchamber as well.
Why then did I have to risk it all for her sake?
Why then was I willing to take a second chance?
She was just a human.
I had not felt this way even for my queen, a mighty dragon.

Man, fanfics have done so much more with Liko and Amethio than the official 'Pokémon Horizons' ever could. The show's barely scratched the surface, right? But writers latch onto their whole rival energy—it's not just about battles, it's about these two kids figuring out who they are in completely opposite circumstances. Liko's got this open-hearted, trusting nature, while Amethio's all duty and guarded walls.
What I keep seeing are fics where their encounters force introspection. Like, a common thread is Amethio witnessing Liko's genuine care for her Pokémon and having his 'ends justify the means' worldview genuinely shaken. It's never a quick change; it's a slow corrosion of his certainty. The best ones don't make him soft overnight. He might start by rationally analyzing her methods as 'inefficient,' only to later catch himself questioning the orders he's given. The emotional growth feels earned because it's messy and often reluctant on his part, while Liko learns to be less naive without losing her core kindness.
Ending on her smiling at him after a truce, and him just looking away, confused by his own reaction—that's the good stuff.
Frieren fanfiction dives deep into her emotional growth post-canon, especially with Himmel, in ways the original material only hints at. Writers often explore her lingering regrets and the weight of immortality, crafting stories where she revisits memories or even encounters Himmel’s spirit. The slow burn of her realizing how much he meant to her is a common theme, with some fics using time loops or afterlife meetings to force her to confront feelings she buried under centuries of detachment.
One standout trope is 'Frieren learns to grieve,' where her stoicism cracks as she finally processes Himmel’s death. A fic I adored had her collecting mundane artifacts he left behind, each triggering flashbacks that reveal his quiet affection. The juxtaposition of her eternal lifespan against his fleeting existence adds layers to her emotional arc—she’s not just mourning him but also the version of herself that could’ve loved him more openly.
