What’s interesting is how that archetype often gets flipped on its head. In a lot of the fantasy I read, the God of Life isn’t just a benevolent force handing out happy endings like candy. They’re more of a chaotic neutral entity, sometimes even antagonistic. Life, by its nature, is messy and unpredictable. So a deity embodying that isn't necessarily concerned with 'good' fate, but with the sheer, stubborn persistence of existence. They might grant a character a second chance not out of kindness, but because their portfolio demands that life, any life, continues—even if it’s a tortured, tragic existence that utterly warps the intended path. Their influence on fate feels less like divine guidance and more like introducing a volatile, organic variable into a neat cosmic equation. The fates woven by other gods get tangled in weeds and vines, redirected by unforeseen growth.

I’m thinking of books like T. Kingfisher’s 'The Saint of Steel' series. The gods there have very specific domains, and the Saint of Steel’s god dies. What happens to the life those paladins were 'fated' to live? It gets utterly derailed, reshaped by survival instinct and new, messy connections—a very 'life finds a way' kind of fate, but not a comfortable one. Or in N.K. Jemisin’s 'The Broken Earth' trilogy, the essence of life-force (orogenes) is what society tries to control and predict, but it constantly erupts, shattering predetermined paths. It’s a force of nature, not a narrative tool. That’ s the influence I find most compelling: when the God of Life doesn’t smooth the road, but ensures the journey is endlessly, complicatedly alive, for better or worse.

I actually get annoyed when they're used as a simple deus ex machina for resurrection plots. It feels cheap. A genuine influence on fate should be subtler, woven into the fabric of the world. Seeds planted centuries ago finally sprouting at a pivotal moment, a forgotten ritual of renewal that alters a prophecy’s wording, a plague that culls a population but forces a genetic adaptation that saves them later. That’s the god of life’s hand—not a flashy miracle, but the slow, relentless pressure of biology and evolution acting on destiny. Their domain is cause and effect on a generational scale, not instant fixes.
