Man, this thread is making me realize how many great gothic mansions are out there. It's like picking a favorite child, if your children were all sprawling estates filled with despair and possibly ghosts.

Can we talk about 'The Hacienda' by Isabel Cañas? It's a fantastic gothic set in post-Independence Mexico. Hacienda San Isidro is the mansion, and it is viciously haunted. The atmosphere is a brilliant blend of classic gothic isolation (a new bride in a remote home) with very specific historical and cultural terrors. The haunting is tied to the violence of the Mexican War of Independence and the oppression of the hacienda system. The house is cold, hostile, and filled with a presence that wants the heroine gone. The atmosphere is enriched by the inclusion of folk Catholicism and a priest-exorcist as a co-protagonist. It's a fresh, culturally rich take on the haunted mansion.

I think the atmosphere of a haunted mansion is often defined by its soundscape. In that regard, 'The Haunting of Hill House' wins for me with its haunting, inconsistent knocking patterns and the chilling line about hearing a laugh in the distance. But 'The Woman in Black' is a close second with the desperate cry of the pony and trap in the marsh. A house that sounds wrong is often scarier than one that just looks wrong. The auditory atmosphere gets under your skin in a way visuals on a page sometimes can't.

Let's give some love to 'The Forgotten Garden' by Kate Morton. The atmosphere is less about horror and more about mystery and lost time. The cottage on the cliffs in Cornwall, and the grand estate it's connected to, are shrouded in family secrets, hidden gardens, and a child's mysterious past. The atmosphere is one of poignant discovery and layered history. The settings feel alive with forgotten stories waiting to be unearthed. It's a softer, more nostalgic gothic, but the sense of place is incredibly strong and evocative.

Hmm, I’m not sure I’ve read enough to pick a ‘most’ memorable. I mostly watch horror movies. Are the book versions usually a lot different? Might have to check some of these out.
