A lot of people immediately jump to King, but my vote goes to Shirley Jackson's 'The Haunting of Hill House'. That book doesn't need a single drop of blood. It's all about the slow erosion of Eleanor's mind, the way the house's architecture itself feels wrong, and the sheer loneliness that curdles into something menacing. The terror is in the sentences that turn on you, the ambiguity of whether the knocking is real or in her head.
Honestly, some modern stuff tries too hard. 'Head Full of Ghosts' by Paul Tremblay is a more recent one that messed me up for days. The whole 'is it possession or severe mental illness' debate, filtered through a sister's childhood memories? The uncertainty is the whole engine. You finish it and you're still turning it over, which is the mark of a proper psychological horror novel for me. The ending still gives me chills thinking about it.

Don't overlook 'The Yellow Wallpaper'. It's a short story, but it packs more psychological terror into a few pages than most novels. The slow-motion unraveling of the narrator's sanity, enforced by 'rest cure' imprisonment, is devastating. The horror is in the societal gaslighting, the confinement, and the terrifying liberation she finds in the wallpaper's pattern. It's a foundational text for a reason—it understands that the real haunting often comes from within, or from the people who claim to love you.

If you want a deep dive into obsession and paranoia, Patricia Highsmith's 'The Talented Mr. Ripley'. Is it strictly horror? Maybe not on the shelf, but the psychological terror Tom Ripley inflicts—and experiences—is unparalleled. Watching him become someone else, the constant fear of exposure, the cold calculation mixed with panic... it's a masterclass in sustained suspense rooted entirely in character. The horror isn't supernatural; it's the human capacity for deception and the terror of the facade slipping. It makes you complicit in his anxiety.

Skip the monsters and give me the creeping dread of 'I'm Thinking of Ending Things'. Iain Reid's whole thing is building this unbelievable tension out of the most mundane situations—a car ride, meeting the boyfriend's parents—until the reality just starts to fracture. You spend the whole book questioning the narrator's perception, and then the payoff... wow. It's short, but it lingers. That book lives in my head rent-free, way more than any gore-fest ever could. The feeling of being utterly, profoundly unsettled by normal things is his specialty, and he nails it here.

For pure, claustrophobic suspense that grinds you down, 'The Silent Patient' by Alex Michaelides fits. It's a thriller with a horror psyche. The locked-room mystery of a woman who stops speaking after seemingly murdering her husband, seen through the eyes of her obsessed therapist. The terror is in the unreliable narration, the twisted therapy sessions, and the shocking reveal that recontextualizes everything. It plays with memory and trauma in a way that feels genuinely disturbing.

Welcome to the house that never sleeps... because it's busy haunting its inhabitants.
This towering building hides in the heart of a quiet Egyptian city, its heart throbbing with crime, madness, and screams that no one hears... except the walls.
In this place, everything begins with a single crime... Nasser, the father, a man in his fifties, suffocated by the shadows of his past, his mind collapsing behind a locked door.

His son, Malek, the young man who tried to forget... found himself falling into an abyss with no bottom.
Voices haunt him... hallucinations suffocate him... and memories bleed every night.
And in this house, Malek begins his journey toward the abyss... Is he a victim? Or a killer in the making?
As for Sophia, the silent sister… she sinks into a hysteria no one understands,
