For a series that builds a whole interstellar civilization without FTL, check out C.J. Cherryh's 'Alliance-Union' universe, especially the 'Company Wars' books like 'Downbelow Station'. It's all about sub-light trade, station politics, and the slow, painful spread of humanity. It's dense with political realism.

Anyone else feel like a lot of these recommendations, while great, skip the initial 'boots on the ground' terror? 'Semiosis' by Sue Burke is a first-contact story from a colony's perspective, focusing on co-evolution with a hostile, intelligent planetary ecosystem. The science is more biology and ecology than astrophysics, but it feels incredibly real.

What's the one where they hollow out an asteroid? Oh, 'Citizen of the Galaxy' by Heinlein has elements of this, but it's more of a space opera romp. Still, the portrayal of a complex, stratified spacefaring society feels lived-in.

Here's an odd one: 'The Martian' by Andy Weir. Again, not interstellar, but it's the ultimate novel of solo colonization/survival on another world, driven by real botany, chemistry, and engineering. If you love the problem-solving aspect of setting up a human presence where everything wants to kill you, this is pure catnip.

For a mix of hard sci-fi and corporate dystopia, 'The Moon is a Harsh Mistress' is essential. It's lunar independence, not interstellar, but Heinlein's rigorous thought about the economics, ecology, and ballistics of a lunar colony is a masterclass in building a believable off-world society from first principles.

Which hard sci fi books focus most on realistic space travel?

Michael Flynn’s 'The January Dancer' and the subsequent 'Spiral Arm' books have a space opera feel, but he puts real work into the astrography. Travel times between stars are long and consequential, and the ‘uld’ that enables travel is treated more as a natural resource to be mined and routed than magic. The economics and politics stem from those physical limitations.

I have a controversial take: some 'hard' SF is so obsessed with being right that it forgets to tell a good story. I'll take a fun adventure with a few plausible concepts over a dry technical manual any day. 'The Martian' works because it's a thrilling survival story first, a textbook second. The realism serves the narrative tension.

Which hard sci fi books of all time portray realistic space travel?

Linda Nagata's 'The Last Good Man' is a near-future military thriller, but her 'Red' trilogy (starts with 'The Last Firewall') and 'Inverted Frontier' series are full of hard SF concepts. She writes about augmented reality, neural interfaces, and autonomous weapons with a techno-thriller's pace but a scientist's eye for plausibility. The space travel in the later books involves rogue AIs, uploaded consciousness, and nanotech swarms, but the rules are consistent and the threats feel emergent from the tech, not magical. She's brilliant at showing how a single technological advance could ripple out and destabilize everything.

Which hard SF books focus most on realistic space travel physics?

Remember that 'realistic' is a moving target. A book from the 70s might have gotten the physics of Venus terribly wrong, but its approach was rigorously scientific for its time. Arthur C. Clarke's 'Rendezvous with Rama' is a perfect example. The mystery of the giant cylindrical starship is investigated with a methodical, scientific detachment. The focus is on observation, measurement, and deduction. The physics of its rotation, internal atmosphere, and trajectory are central. It’s less about human drama and more about the awe of discovery, guided by a scientific mindset.

Which hard sci fi books of all time focus on believable alien life?

To offer a slightly critical perspective: a lot of hard SF alien life can feel a bit... cold. The focus on plausible biology and physics sometimes comes at the expense of giving the aliens relatable (or intriguingly un-relatable) psychology. That's why I often bounce off Greg Egan, even though I admire his ideas. I need a little more soul in my aliens, even if that soul is fundamentally different from ours.
