Man, I'm probably gonna get some hate for this but I think the 'magical conflict' in H/Hr fics often ends up feeling a bit shallow. Like, there's a trend where Harry discovers he's some super-rare elemental mage or something, and Hermione's the only one who can stabilize his magic with runes or whatever. It's cool in theory, but it gets old. One I remember was 'Harry Potter and the Power of Magic'—the author had Harry's accidental magic being so strong it's tearing reality, and Hermione has to help him bind it. The actual spell duels were alright, but the central conflict always resolved by them just... hugging it out? The magic felt like a vehicle for romance, not a source of genuine friction.
I'd rather read something where their intellectual differences on magic cause the conflict. Like, Hermione's rigid adherence to book-magic clashing with Harry's instinctive, DADA-driven approach during a war, creating real tension that isn't just solved by a kiss. You don't see that often enough, in my opinion.
Oh, definitely the 'Horcrux hunting gone wrong' sub-genre. There's a whole bunch of fics where Harry and Hermione are on the run post-DH, but something about the horcrux hunt left a magical scar or backlash. I read one where the destruction of each horcrux created a kind of magical feedback loop that started warping the magical landscape around them, causing unpredictable phenomena. They had to work together to contain these 'leaks' while also dodging Snatchers.
It's less about big flashy battles and more about a constant, low-grade magical siege, which I think suits their dynamic. Hermione's constantly researching, Harry's improvising protections. The conflict comes from the environment itself being hostile and magical, forcing them to rely on and sometimes clash over their very different skill sets. The title escapes me now, but the premise was they accidentally created a mobile pocket dimension that was slowly unraveling.
Found a few that treat magic itself as the antagonist. 'The Arithmancer' series has Hermione as a prodigy in spell-creation, and later fics in that universe pit her and Harry against magical plagues, cursed artefacts, and unstable experimental magic. The conflict is deeply technical—Hermione's equations versus Harry's seeker-like adaptability in a crisis. It's not just fighting Death Eaters; it's solving magical problems that have no textbook answer, which feels very true to their characters. The stakes feel higher because the enemy isn't a person, it's a force they're trying to understand.

When the Golden boy rejects Hermione for the Queen Bee; her cousin, the whole realm becomes set to experience a new emergence.
"You!" I yell, pushing his shoulder. A small smile played on his lips, as he drinks in the sight of my drenched hair and dress.
"Eyes here! You don't..." His lips suddenly clasp over mine, as his right hand comes to hold my hair gently. My eyes were out in shock. I try to push him... his tongue teasing and seeking... My whole being betrays as my eyes close in surrender…
I kiss him back passionately, caressing his soft hair... A bright light shines above us when I suddenly unlatch my shaky lips to catch my breath. The full moon.
"Magnificent, huh?" He asks, taking a look at the sky. I shakily nod. I was very much speechless.
My eyes saunter back to his swollen lips...
"My Prince!" Some royal guards call, running to the pool.

Fates... How much do you believe in Fates?
Centuries ago, a prophecy was told. In time, bits of pieces were lost. The remaining was preserved but it left many questions:
"Every period of time comes forth the Archnemesis.
The night will fall like the snow in winter season
and the day will come like a flower that blooms in springtime.
War shall cause the lives of many and the weak shall suffer.
But lo, and behold, in a family of winter shall come the Blood Star of every generation.
Strength and might that shall spill the blood of its Adversary by the death with its soul."
Chloe Liu just wanted to become a fully pledged Kryst, a soldier of the Kingdom of Demetrius.
Lucian Liu and the members of the Seven Geniuses just wanted to protect his sister.
Prince Ciaran, the Særi ust Trūx (Future King), just wanted to protect the Kingdom of Demetrius along with his friends.
What if the Fates wanted more?

Finding those specific Harry/Hermione stories where the emotional conflict is the main draw can be tricky, but there are spots. I tend to wander over to FanFiction.net and sort by favorites in that category, then really dig into summaries. A lot of fluff gets top votes, but if you see tags like 'angst' or a summary mentioning 'guilt' or 'post-war trauma,' that's your signal. The Archive of Our Own tag system is a lifesaver for this—you can filter for 'Emotional Hurt/Comfort' or 'Pining' alongside the ship.
One I went back to recently was 'Vox Corporis,' though it's been ages. It's a classic for a reason, and the emotional tension from the Animagus bond scenario really builds slowly. Sometimes you have to wade through a few abandoned WIPs, but the search is part of the process for me. I've also had luck on smaller, forum-based sites that focus on novel-length stuff, where writers seem to dwell more on internal conflict than plot mechanics.
Back in the day, 'Harmony' was basically its own genre on Portkey. The obvious plot everyone did was 'what if Harry and Hermione got together in fourth year instead of Ron?' That's 'Harry Potter and the Last Chance' territory—everybody read at least one like that. But the ones that actually stuck with me twisted the premise. There's this whole subgenre where Hermione goes back in time, usually to fix things, and ends up with a younger James Potter or Sirius Black, which somehow always makes present-day Harry jealous or confused. It's weirdly specific, but it was everywhere on FictionAlley.
I never got the appeal of the 'soul bond' or 'marriage law' fics for them, though. Those felt forced, like the author just wanted them together and used magic as a shortcut. The better ones built it slowly, like 'Unlike a Sister', where the tension comes from them being married to other people but drawn to each other years after the war. That one hurts to read in the best way.
Honestly, a lot of the popular plots are just ways to sideline Ron or make him the villain, which feels lazy now. The good stuff makes you believe the shift, you know?
