Sometimes the setting itself forces a different kind of strength. 'The Deep' by Rivers Solomon (with Daveed Diggs et al.) is historical fantasy rooted in the horror of the transatlantic slave trade. The wajinru are mermaids born from pregnant enslaved women thrown overboard. Their historian, Yetu, carries the traumatic memory of her entire people. Her strength is in bearing this unbearable weight and eventually finding a way to share it. It’s a novella of breathtaking power. The romantic element is very subtle, but the core relationship is with her people and her own mind. The strength here is ancestral, painful, and ultimately about collective survival. It’s not a romance-focused book, but it redefines ‘strong heroine’ on a profound level.
Does anyone else find that their tolerance for a 'strong heroine' depends on the prose style? Some books tell me she’s strong with clunky inner monologue, while others show it through her actions and choices so seamlessly I don’t even think about the label. The writing in 'The Ten Thousand Doors of January' by Alix E. Harrow is so lush and compelling that January Scaller’s strength feels innate. She’s a biracial girl in a gilded cage in 1901, and her strength is her imagination, her yearning, and her eventual act of writing her own story into reality. The romance is sweet and supportive, part of her journey of self-discovery. The strength is artistic, narrative, and deeply moving. The book is a love letter to stories and the power of doors.

When the Dragon Warlord seizes her crumbling kingdom, Sera expects death—not a collar of gold and a vow of possession. Claimed as tribute, she is taken to the heart of the mountain, where fire breathes and ancient magic sleeps beneath the stone.
Rhazien is ruthless, monstrous, and terrifyingly divine. But he is also bound by something older than war: the need to claim. To protect. To own.
Sera refuses to break. But as power shifts and passion ignites, she learns that dragons don’t ask. They take. And this warlord doesn’t just want her obedience—he wants her heart.
And if she gives it to him, she may never survive the fall.
The Dragon Warlord’s Bride is a dark fantasy romance full of possession, power struggles, and slow-burn heat. Perfect for fans of monster lovers, mating bonds, and morally unhinged kings who’d burn the world for their queen.

The Moon Goddess may have written the rules, but these she-wolves are tearing them apart.
In this sweeping five-book saga, the Lycanthrope species—creatures of power beyond mortal imagination—dare to defy destiny itself. Mate bonds ignite passion and peril, but every she-wolf knows love can be a weapon as much as a gift. Tradition demands obedience. They choose rebellion.
It begins with Ana, a Hybrid caught between worlds, whose collision with Romani, the ruthless Lycan Crown Prince, sparks a bond that could either save her—or destroy her. His dominance threatens to consume her, yet Ana refuses to bow. Every choice she makes twists the Goddess’s plan tighter, until fate itself trembles.
From Ana’s defiance to the cunning of wolves who wield mate bonds like blades, each book unveils a battle where freedom clashes with love, rebellion with tradition, and power with vulnerability. The Goddess watches. The wolves fight back. And destiny will bleed before it breaks.
This is not a tale of wolves who obey.
This is the saga of wolves who refuse to surrender…
