One of my all-time favorites is 'The Palace of Illusions' by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni. It retells the Mahabharata from Draupadi's perspective, and wow, does it pack an emotional punch. The way Divakaruni reimagines her as a fiery, complex woman navigating a world of gods and warriors is just brilliant. I love how it digs into her loneliness, ambitions, and the weight of prophecy—it feels so modern yet rooted in epic tradition.
Another gem is 'Rajmohan’s Wife' by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, often called India’s first English novel. Matangini, the protagonist, is this fierce, rebellious woman trapped in a miserable marriage. For a 19th-century novel, her agency is startling—she defies social norms, risks everything for love, and even outsmarts villains. It’s a bit melodramatic by today’s standards, but her character still shines through. Both books made me rethink how history frames women’s voices.

For something shorter but equally powerful, check out ‘The Puffin Mahabharata’ by Namita Gokhale. It’s technically a retelling for younger readers, but the way it highlights women like Kunti and Gandhari—their grief, resilience, and quiet scheming—is unforgettable. Also, ‘Shadow Play’ by Shashi Deshpande weaves myth into contemporary frames, showing how historical heroines like Sita still echo in modern women’s struggles. Neither book is a straight-up historical novel, but they prove how India’s past is always being reinterpreted through female eyes. Makes you wonder who else’s stories are waiting to be unearthed.

If you want something lush and immersive, 'The Far Field' by Madhuri Vijay isn’t strictly historical, but its flashbacks to mid-20th-century Kashmir through Shalini’s eyes feel like peeling back layers of time. Her journey to uncover her mother’s past mirrors how women’s stories get buried in political upheavals. Then there’s ‘Cuckold’ by Kiran Nagarkar—though the titular character is male, his wife, Mirabai, steals every scene. Her devotion to Krishna and rejection of royal duty paint this haunting portrait of a saint-poetess caught between love and dogma.
What’s fascinating is how these authors use fiction to resurrect sidelined figures. Like in ‘The Mirror of Beauty’ by Shamsur Rahman Faruqi, where Wazir Khanam’s life spans Mughal decadence and British rule. Her beauty isn’t just ornamental; it’s a lens for cultural collision.

Jaiyana Chakravarti has spent her life buried in research, chasing ancient stories whispered through her family line—legends of a forgotten goddess-warrior whose blood still runs in her veins. Now, as a doctoral student conducting fieldwork for her dissertation, Jaiyana’s awakening to her true power with the help of the secretive Obscura Directorate—an organization that protects dangerous relics, forbidden knowledge, and the supernatural threats the world no longer remembers—comes just in time as her true enemy reveals himself.
When a long-dormant Demon King rises to reclaim the world he once nearly destroyed, Jaiyana discovers the legends were never just stories. Her lineage holds the power to stop this ancient evil… but only if she learns to wield the celestial weapons crafted for her ancestor. And those weapons are locked within the Directorate’s vaults, requiring trials she never trained for and strength she isn’t sure she possesses.
Kaplan, a white tiger shifter and the last heir of a warrior line once sworn to protect Jaiyana’s goddess-blooded ancestor, is sent to fulfill an ancient promise: he is her fated mate, battle partner, and equal. But the bond between them is not forced, it is a choice of love. And Jaiyana, who built her life on logic and independence, is not prepared for a destiny wrapped in prophecy, claws, and a breathtakingly gentle heart.
As Jaiyana and Kaplan train under the Directorate’s watchful eye, their partnership deepens into a powerful love—one that strengthens the magic awakening inside her. But with the enemy growing bolder, and the Directorate divided on whether she can be trusted with the weapons she was born to wield, Jaiyana faces an impossible path: master her emerging power, earn the Directorate’s approval, and embrace a bond that could save—or shatter—both their worlds.

Historical fiction with fierce women? Let me gush about my favorites!
'Outlander' by Diana Gabaldon is a no-brainer—Claire Fraser is a WWII nurse who time-travels to 1743 Scotland and refuses to be sidelined by the era's sexism. Her medical skills, quick wit, and sheer stubbornness make her unforgettable. Then there's 'The Book of Longings' by Sue Monk Kidd, which reimagines Jesus' wife Ana as a rebellious scribe in ancient Judea, fighting to preserve women's stories. It's lyrical and bold, blending history with what-ifs.
For something darker, 'Alias Grace' by Margaret Atwood follows a real-life 19th-century Canadian maid accused of murder. Atwood's Grace is enigmatic—victim or villain? The ambiguity makes her haunting. And don't overlook 'The Red Tent' by Anita Diamant, which gives Dinah from the Bible a voice full of sisterhood and resilience. These books don't just feature strong women—they let them roar.
