Publication order, no question. 'The Royal We', then 'The Heir Affair'. The novella 'The Prince & the Guard' can be read after either, but I did it after 'The Heir Affair' and was fine. The short stories are just fluff, read them whenever you want a quick hit of the universe after finishing everything else. I tried starting with the prequel novella once and it completely spoiled the mystery around that character in the first book. Totally killed the tension.

My two cents: it depends on your tolerance for flashbacks. I hate being yanked out of a timeline, so I actually prefer chronological order within the fiction's timeline. That means starting with 'The Prince & the Guard', which is set years before the main books. Then you go into 'The Royal We' and 'The Heir Affair' straight through.

I know people say the novella has spoilers, but I found it created a sense of dramatic irony instead. You know secrets the main characters don't, which made their interactions way more tense and poignant for me. The short story collection has scenes that slot in all over the timeline, though, so I'd still save that for last regardless. It's too disjointed to try and integrate.

This order made the whole saga feel like one epic generational story to me, rather than two main books with some add-ons.

Stick to release order. 'The Royal We' first, always. The way the author reveals information is paced for that entry point. Jumping around trying to be clever with chronology usually just messes with the intended emotional beats. The other stuff is bonus material for after you're hooked.

I've seen this asked a dozen times, and honestly, I think publication order is the only way that makes real sense for the world-building. Starting with 'The Royal We' introduces you to the core cast and the central romance under immense pressure, which sets up the political stakes perfectly.

Then you move into 'The Heir Affair', which directly continues that story. The time jump and the new complications hit so much harder when you've just lived through the first book's climax.

After those two, I'd say dive into the novella 'The Prince & the Guard'. It's a side story, but it provides crucial backstory for a fan-favorite character and explains some motivations that otherwise seem random in the main duology. Some people recommend reading it first, but I feel like you need the context of the main books to even care about that character's past.

Finally, there's 'The Royal Holiday' collection of short stories. They're nice little epilogues and bonus scenes, but they're pure dessert. Save them for after you're already invested, or they won't land at all. Trying to mix them in chronologically just breaks the narrative flow of the core novels.

For the 'Royals' series, assuming we're talking about the contemporary romance ones by Erin Watt, there are three core novels that form the central story: 'Paper Princess', 'Broken Prince', and 'Twisted Palace'. That's the binge-able heart of it. But then you've got 'Fallen Heir' and 'Cracked Kingdom', which follow a different set of characters in the same world. Some lists count those, pushing the total to five. And I think there are a couple of bonus short stories floating around digitally, like 'The Royals: Christmas', which just adds to the confusion.
