Don't even think about jumping in mid-series; the overarching plot builds book by book. 'A Hunger Like No Other' lays the groundwork for the Accession, the major supernatural conflict. Key characters from later books appear in supporting roles early on, so you'd miss a lot of context. Plus, the world-building around the different immortal species is introduced gradually. Skipping around would just leave you confused about alliances and lore. Reading in publication order is absolutely essential for this series to make any sense at all. The payoff in later books relies heavily on setups from the earlier ones.

I tried starting with 'Wicked Deeds on a Winter's Night' because I heard Bowen was amazing, but I was so lost. Who are all these witches? Why is this Valkyrie so mad? What’s the deal with the Turning ceremony? It really assumes you’ve read the first two books. The series is like a soap opera; you need to know the history between the characters. I went back and read from the beginning, and it was a much better experience. The little rivalries and alliances between the different houses make way more sense when you’ve seen them develop.

I love a good villain origin story, and IAD does them well. But you appreciate a villain’s story more when you’ve seen them be a villain. Lothaire is the prime example. He’s a menace in multiple early books. By the time you get to his book, you have a complex relationship with him. Starting with a villain’s book flattens that experience. So, for the full ‘enemy-to-lover’ or ‘redemption’ arc effect, you need the build-up. Publication order provides that.

The humor is a huge part of the appeal. The Valkyrie sisterhood, with their modern attitudes, shopping trips, and irreverent takes on ancient immortal drama, is hilarious. That dynamic is established in the first book with Emmaline and her aunts. If you skip ahead, you miss the foundation of their culture—why they hate the Lykae, why they’re so protective, why they’re so funny. Their banter is a series hallmark, and it’s best appreciated from the origin point.

I bounced off the first book hard. Lachlain's behavior in the first half was a deal-breaker for me, and I dropped the series for years. Later, I picked up 'Pleasure of a Dark Prince' because the blurb appealed to me, and I loved it. I went back and read the earlier books with a different perspective, knowing the series got better. So, if book one is a struggle, maybe skip ahead to a pairing that intrigues you more, like Lucia and Garreth. You can always circle back later when you’re invested in the world.

Which Immortals After Dark book should I start with in the series?

The sheer number of books is daunting, I get it. But view it as a positive—you have a huge, amazing world to live in for months. Don't rush to 'catch up.' Savor it. Starting at the beginning allows you to savor the slow build. You get to know each couple, each species, each faction intimately. You become part of the Lore. Reading in order is the most immersive way to do that. It's not a chore; it's a gift. So begin with 'A Hunger Like No Other' and settle in for a long, fantastic ride. Don't worry about the end. Enjoy each book as its own story and as a piece of a much larger, brilliant puzzle.

'No Rest for the Wicked' was my gateway. The whole 'Amazing Race' with supernatural contestants plot was so fun and engaging. It's a great standalone adventure that requires minimal prior knowledge. It introduces you to the Valkyrie properly via Kaderin and gives you a taste of the Lore. I think it's a fantastic and underrated starting point that doesn't get enough credit.

I have a soft spot for 'Wicked Deeds on a Winter's Night'. The atmosphere is so thick you can feel the cold. Bowen's centuries-long grief, Mariketa's vibrant spirit... it's a perfect balance of melancholy and hope. It also introduces the witches, which are a major faction. It works beautifully as a first book because it feels so complete and immersive on its own.

Which Immortals After Dark book comes first in the series?

Let's frame it as a TV series. 'The Warlord Wants Forever' is the pilot episode that sets up the world and the central conflict. 'A Hunger Like No Other' is the first full episode that introduces the ongoing format and main ensemble vibe. Some shows have pilots that are very different in tone from the series proper. Watching the pilot gives you crucial background. Skipping it means you might be confused about why certain characters hate each other. But many people start with episode one and catch up on the pilot later. Both are valid viewing experiences. Apply the same logic here. Do you want the full context upfront, or do you want to dive into the weekly adventure?

In what order should I read the Immortals After Dark books?

The library app I use only has some of them, and not in order. So my order is... chaotic. Whatever's available. It's not ideal, and I get confused about the overarching Ascension plot, but the individual love stories are still satisfying. Sometimes access dictates order more than ideal planning.

How do the Immortals After Dark novels connect in reading order?

3 Answers2026-07-24 17:34:18
I think the fear of a long series puts people off. 'Fourteen books? I need an order?' But it's not a chore; it's the fun. The connections are the reward. Spotting a side character from three books ago now getting their own chapter is a little dopamine hit. Seeing a prophecy you read about forever ago finally come to pass is incredibly satisfying. The reading order is just the path that maximizes those rewards. It's like a treasure map where X marks the spot of the next great romance, but you have to follow the trail to get the full value of the treasure.

What is the correct Immortals After Dark book order to read?

3 Answers2026-07-24 01:42:42
Goodreads shelves are your friend here. Make a 'IAD in Order' shelf and add them as you go. It’s satisfying to tick them off. The list is: 1. A Hunger Like No Other, 2. No Rest for the Wicked, 3. Wicked Deeds on a Winter’s Night, 4. Dark Needs at Night’s Edge, 5. Dark Desires After Dusk, 6. Kiss of a Demon King, 7. Demon from the Dark, 8. Dreams of a Dark Warrior, 9. Lothaire, 10. Shadow’s Claim, 11. MacRieve, 12. Dark Skye, 13. Sweet Ruin, 14. Wicked Abyss, 15. Munro. Anthology stories slot in after books 4, 8, and 10, roughly. It’s a marathon, not a sprint.
