Waiting for someone to mention 'The Great Indian Novel' by Shashi Tharoor. Now that would be an adaptation challenge. How do you even begin to film that satirical, mythic retelling of Indian history? It would have to be an absurdist, animated series maybe, with a narrator breaking the fourth wall constantly.

Some books are beloved bestsellers precisely because they're so unfilmable. Their pleasure is in the wordplay, the dense allusions, the narrative voice. Attempting to adapt them is a fool's errand, but I'd love to see someone try. The failed attempt would be more interesting than a safe success with a more straightforward story.

It's the ambitious, crazy failures in adaptation that I secretly enjoy more than the competent, predictable successes. At least they swing for the fences.

Has the series 'The Family Man' been mentioned? I know it's not a direct book adaptation, but the creators have said it's heavily inspired by contemporary Indian spy thrillers and non-fiction accounts. That's another angle—bestselling non-fiction inspiring fictionalized shows. The show 'Scam 1992' was based on a non-fiction book, and it was phenomenal.

So the definition of 'bestseller' should maybe include non-fiction too. Books about business, crime, and politics are becoming the source material for some of the most gripping content out there. They provide a ready-made plot, deep research, and real-world stakes that writers can build upon.

It's a smarter way to adapt, sometimes. You get the credibility of a true story with the creative freedom to shape characters and dialogue for drama.

For a quick list off the top of my head: 'The Namesake' (Jhumpa Lahiri), 'Life of Pi' (Yann Martel, though not an Indian author, the film was a major Indian production), 'Queen' (was inspired by a book called 'Going Solo'), 'Kai Po Che!' (based on 'The 3 Mistakes of My Life' by Chetan Bhagat), and 'Shantaram' got a TV series though it was an international production. Oh, and 'Bombay Velvet' was partly inspired by 'Mumbai Fables' by Gyan Prakash, though that's more non-fiction.

It's a mixed bag in terms of quality. 'The Namesake' film is a beautiful, quiet piece, while some of the Bhagat adaptations are full-on masala entertainers. It really shows the range of Indian cinema—it can handle subtle literary drama and big commercial romance equally.

From a purely practical 'how-to-find-them' angle, Wikipedia has a decent list if you search 'List of Indian novels adapted into films'. But a more fun way is to follow bookstagrammers or literary critics on Twitter. Whenever a new adaptation is announced, they'll dissect the casting and the trailer, comparing it to the source material.

You'll also notice patterns. Psychological thrillers are the new hot property. After the success of 'The Girl on the Train' globally, Indian producers are looking for domestic equivalents. Books like 'The Sane Psychopath' or 'The Silent Patient' (though that's not Indian) show the demand. The next wave of adaptations will probably be in that dark, twisty genre.

It's a good time to be a thriller writer in India, for sure. The path from book deal to screen deal is shorter than ever.

From a writer's perspective, getting your book adapted must be surreal. One day you're alone with your manuscript, the next you're on set watching actors say your words. But I've heard it can also be frustrating. You have to let go of your 'baby' and accept that it's now a collaborative product with a hundred other parents.

Some authors get heavily involved as script consultants; others are paid and politely shown the door. The level of creative control varies wildly. I think I'd be the type to take the money and run, not watch the process. Too emotionally risky! But for others, it's a dream to see their world built physically.

It's made me rethink how I read books now. I sometimes catch myself thinking, 'This scene would play great on screen,' which is probably a terrible habit for pure literary appreciation.

I’ve always been fascinated by how Indian novels transform into visual masterpieces. 'Shantaram' by Gregory David Roberts is a gripping tale of an escaped convict finding redemption in Mumbai, though the film adaptation has been in development limbo for years. Then there’s 'The White Tiger' by Aravind Adiga, which became a critically acclaimed Netflix film, capturing the raw essence of class struggle in India. Chetan Bhagat’s '2 States' is another standout, adapted into a sweet, relatable rom-com about cross-cultural love. For historical depth, 'Train to Pakistan' by Khushwant Singh was brought to life with haunting realism. Each adaptation offers a unique lens into the original work, making them worth experiencing in both forms.

Hmm, I'm drawing a blank on specifics beyond the obvious ones everyone's already mentioned. Maybe someone else can chime in with some deeper cuts? I feel like there's probably a ton of regional bestsellers that got made into popular films in their respective states.

Platforms like Audible are creating a new form of 'adaptation'—the full-cast audiobook. A good thriller novel with sound effects and multiple voice actors becomes a cinematic experience in itself. Is that an adaptation, or a new presentation of the original text? It's a gray area. For someone who consumes stories primarily through audio, a well-produced audiobook of 'The White Tiger' or a Hussain Zaidi book might be the definitive version, surpassing a visual adaptation in their mind.
