Let's not forget the epic that is the Mahabharata. Any retelling, whether it's C. Rajagopalachari's classic prose version or modern takes like 'The Palace of Illusions' or 'Jaya' by Devdutt Pattanaik, is the ultimate family saga—complete with dynastic war, complex moral dilemmas, and enough familial drama for a thousand soap operas. It's the foundational text for so much of this. Reading a good retelling is like getting the archetype for all the jealousy, loyalty, ambition, and duty that define later Indian family narratives in literature.
I'm currently deep into 'The Book of Everlasting Things' by Aanchal Malhotra. It follows a Hindu perfumer and a Muslim calligrapher from pre-Partition Lahore through decades of separation. It's a gorgeous, sensory-rich saga about love, art, and how families are torn apart and remade by history. The research and emotional depth are incredible. For something older, Kamala Markandaya's 'Nectar in a Sieve' is a classic, heartbreaking story of a rural family's struggle against famine and modernization. It's a short, potent saga of resilience.
I'd throw in Vikram Chandra's 'Sacred Games' – yes, it's a crime epic, but at its core, it's about the found families of the police and the underworld, and it delves deep into the backstories and lineages of its characters. It's a Mumbai saga, and the city itself feels like a chaotic, sprawling family. For a more traditional, multi-generational story, 'The Tree Bride' by Bharati Mukherjee traces a woman's journey into her ancestor's revolutionary past in Bengal. Both are dense, rewarding, and full of historical sweep.
Looking for something recent? 'The Covenant of Water' by Abraham Verghese is getting a ton of well-deserved hype. It follows a family in Kerala over three generations, with a medical mystery (a familial propensity for drowning) woven through it. Verghese is a doctor, so the medical details are fascinating, but the heart of it is the family's loves, losses, and secrets. It's a big, generous, absorbing book that absolutely fits the 'gripping family saga' brief. It has that classic saga feel of being swept along by history and fate.
I'm waiting for my library hold on 'The Covenant of Water' to come through! All this talk about it is making me impatient. In the meantime, I'm re-reading some of Ruskin Bond's Rusty stories. They're not sagas, but there's a lovely, nostalgic thread of family-like connections with the people of Dehra throughout them. Sometimes you don't need a multi-generational epic, just a consistent, warm voice telling stories about a place and its people across time. That can feel just as much like coming home.

"You will walk out of this marriage as you came into it, with only your clothes. You won't get sent nor will you get a house or a car. Sign them and get lost." I fight back the tears as I signed the papers and when I look at him I almost gasp as I saw the hate he has as he look at me.
"The day you realize you made a mistake it will be too late," I tell him emotionless as I walked to the door just as I was about to step out I feel someone grabbing my arm hard making me whimper, "Why would I want someone as disgusting, ugly as you again? I'm glad I finally got rid of you why would I want to come running back to you Ash?" I feel my heart shattered into a million pieces as I hear him say those hurtful words.
Ashley left the house heartbroken and pregnant after he chased her away.

Some cravings are too sinful to confess, too dangerous to speak aloud. '𝐒𝐈𝐍𝐍𝐄𝐑𝐒 𝐓𝐎𝐎 𝐍𝐄𝐄𝐃 𝐓𝐎 𝐓𝐄𝐋𝐋 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐈𝐑 𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐑𝐈𝐄𝐒' which are whispered in the dark, written between trembling thighs, and etched in the silence after desire has burned through reason.

What about 'The Great Indian Novel' by Shashi Tharoor? It's a satirical retelling of the Mahabharata, paralleling it with the Indian independence movement and early political history. It frames modern Indian political 'dynasties' as a multigenerational epic, full of rivalry, idealism, and betrayal.
It's witty, clever, and requires some familiarity with Indian politics to catch all the allegories. The generational saga here is of a nation imagined as a family. It’s a unique blend of myth, history, and political commentary that counts as a very unconventional family saga.
Vikram Seth's 'A Suitable Boy' is monumental—literally over 1,300 pages. It follows four families in post-independence, post-partition India, navigating love, politics, and religion. The grip is in the immersive detail; you feel you know these families intimately, their petty squabbles and grand ambitions. Seth writes with such warmth and gentle humor that even bureaucratic subplots about land reform become fascinating. It’s a slow, steady burn rather than a thriller’s pace. You live inside this world for so long that leaving it feels like moving away from home. If you have the patience, it’s one of the most comprehensive and satisfying family sagas ever written.
