Let me flip the script. What about historical fiction with a strong romantic core? Something like 'The Twentieth Wife' by Indu Sundaresan? It follows the life of Mehrunnisa across books, and her relationship with Emperor Jahangir is central, though it's not only a romance. It's historical biographical fiction. The couple remains the same, but the genre is broader.

Maybe it's a branding issue. What if it exists but isn't shelved as 'Romance'? It might be in 'Fiction' or 'Family Drama.' The romantic throughline is there, but it's not the primary marketing hook. So our keyword searches for 'Indian romance series' fail. We need to dig deeper into general fiction.

Scanning my Goodreads... nope. All the Indian romance I've rated are self-contained stories. Even authors who write sequels, like a 'Five Years Later' epilogue novel, seem rare. It's a shame. I'd love to follow a couple from college sweethearts to parenthood through three or four books.

Think about the structure. A romance series following one couple is usually a trilogy: getting together, a conflict threatening them, then a final reaffirmation. That model is huge in Western publishing. In India, the 'romance' genre in English is still heavily influenced by standalone Bollywood-style narratives—big meet-cute, big conflict, big resolution. The series model hasn't been imported successfully yet.

I'm drawing a complete blank, and I consider myself pretty well-read in this category. It's making me question my memory. Maybe there's a famous series I'm forgetting? Goes to stare at bookshelf

Which Indian love novels focus on mature, married couples?

My two cents: don't limit yourself to novels labeled 'romance'. Some of the best portrayals of mature love are hiding in plain sight within family sagas or historical fiction. Indu Sundaresan's 'The Twentieth Wife' and its sequels, while about a historical figure, offer a sprawling, intricate look at marriage within the Mughal court—full of politics, passion, and compromise over a lifetime. It's a different kind of maturity, shaped by power and tradition. Similarly, 'The Palace of Illusions' by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni retells the Mahabharata from Draupadi's perspective, and her complex relationships with her five husbands are explored with psychological depth. It's about love, but also duty, jealousy, and partnership forged in extraordinary circumstances. The scale is epic, but the emotional insights into married life are intimately human. Sometimes the oldest stories have the most mature lessons on love.

Which Indian fiction sagas follow multiple generations of the same family?

I prefer sagas that focus on the women. 'The Mistress of Spices' by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni has that element of magical lineage, with the mantle of Mistress passing down. It's more about a spiritual sisterhood than a bloodline, but it deals powerfully with what is handed down from one generation of women to the next.
