The multiple timelines in 'Infinity Gate' aren't just a narrative gimmick—they're the backbone of its world-building. The story dives into the idea of a multiverse where every decision branches into new realities, and the titular Infinity Gate acts as a bridge between them. What fascinates me is how the author uses this structure to explore 'what if' scenarios without feeling repetitive. Each timeline reflects choices that ripple outward, showing how tiny changes alter destinies. Like, in one thread, a character might become a hero, while in another, they’re a villain, and neither feels forced. It’s a clever way to examine morality and consequence.
Plus, the timelines aren’t isolated; they collide. The chaos when parallel worlds interact creates this delicious tension—characters meeting their doppelgängers, conflicting goals, and the existential dread of knowing there’s infinite versions of yourself. It reminds me of games like 'Chrono Cross' or the 'Steins;Gate' anime, where timeline jumps aren’t clean resets but messy overlaps. The book leans into that messiness, making the stakes feel real. After all, if every choice matters, how do you decide which timeline is 'right'? That ambiguity is what keeps me flipping pages.
Honestly, the multiple timelines in 'Infinity Gate' hooked me because they make the story feel alive. Instead of a linear plot, it’s like watching a tapestry weave itself—threads of possibility tangling and untangling. The protagonist’s journey through different versions of reality isn’t just about action; it’s a metaphor for how we all wonder about paths not taken. The timelines clash in ways that highlight how fragile our sense of 'truth' is, and that’s way more interesting than a straightforward adventure.

The ending of 'Infinity Gate' by M.R. Carey is a wild, emotionally charged rollercoaster that leaves you both satisfied and desperate for more. The book wraps up its multiverse-spanning conflict with a mix of tragedy and hope, as the protagonist, Hadiz Tambuwal, makes a heart-wrenching sacrifice to prevent the Pandominion from collapsing into chaos. Her decision to merge with the AI Essien essentially turns her into a guardian of the multiverse, a bittersweet resolution that underscores the themes of responsibility and loss. The final scenes tease the possibility of future adventures, with the surviving characters left to navigate a radically changed reality.
What really stuck with me was how Carey balances the epic scale of the story with deeply personal moments. Hadiz’s arc feels incredibly human despite the sci-fi grandeur, and the ending doesn’t shy away from the cost of her choices. The way the narrative leaves some threads open—like the fate of the other parallel worlds and the lingering threat of the Pandominion’s remnants—makes it feel like a lived-in universe rather than a neatly tied-up plot. It’s the kind of ending that lingers in your mind for days, making you flip back to earlier chapters just to savor how everything connects. If you’re into stories that blend hard sci-fi with raw emotional stakes, this one’s a knockout.
