I think the TV writers underestimated the audience's appetite for serialization. In the early 2000s, maybe they were right. But now, with binge-watching, I wonder if a new adaptation could follow the book order closely, treating each season like a novel, letting the characters' lives truly change. It would be darker, slower, and absolutely devastating. I'd watch that in a heartbeat.

The pilot episode is a perfect example of the scramble. 'Well-Schooled in Murder' is a great story, but as the first introduction, it presents a Lynley and Havers who are already a functional, if bickering, team. You miss the incredible tension of 'A Great Deliverance', where they meet under horrible circumstances and truly despise each other's methods. That initial hostility makes their later loyalty so powerful.

Honestly, I'm just here because I saw the thread title and I'm in the middle of rereading 'In Pursuit of the Proper Sinner'. The timeline in that one is so complex, it makes my head spin. I can't imagine how they'd even begin to adapt it for TV given their scrambled order. Probably just take the surface murder plot and ditch all the flashbacks and parallel storylines.

Luke doesn't do relationships, he enjoys a long line of willing women and has no desire to change that.
One day the new girl at school asks him to teach her how to kiss. No relationship, no strings, a simple student/teacher relationship or is it?

Murder Inquiry is a crime fiction, whose plot is about Edwin Wolfgang, a rich New York based banker, who gives out loans for which he accepts artworks as collateral, but kills his customers before they are able to pay back the loan. And a FBI agent attached to the New York field office, who's charged with the task of bringing Mr Wolfgang to book. The story is set in three cities, in three different continents, and is full of twists and turns from the killing of Wolfgang's last two victims, up to his eventual arrest.
Havers' fashion sense is tragically consistent across both media, so there's that. Order schmorder. The soul of the thing is intact. You get the brilliant, class-clashing partnership solving crimes. The specific case order is just the wrapping paper.
One thing I'll give the show: it cast Lynley and Havers pretty well visually. Nathaniel Parker looks like how I imagined Lynley, even if the writing simplified him. Sharon Small captures Havers' spirit, if not her exact edges. So while the stories don't match order or depth, the faces fit, which helps bridge the gap for viewers who later pick up the books.
I see people asking if they can skip the prequel, 'A Suitable Vengeance'. Don't. Even though it’s set earlier in Lynley’s life, it was published fourth and assumes you know the characters from the first three books. It reveals backstory about his family and his relationship with Simon St. James that has more impact if you’ve already spent time with them in the 'present' timeline.
Look, if you're in it for the mysteries themselves, most are standalone. You could pick based on the setting—'Playing for the Ashes' for the cricket world, 'Missing Joseph' for the village poisoner trope. But you'll miss a lot of the office politics and personal subtext.
Libraries often have 'A Great Deliverance' in multiple copies because it's the first. If it's checked out, don't jump ahead. Wait for it. The introduction of Lynley and Havers is iconic, and you'll miss the foundation of their dynamic. I made that mistake with another series once and never really connected with the characters because I started in the middle. With Lynley, that initial clash of personalities—the polished earl vs. the disheveled detective—sets the tone for everything that follows. It's worth the wait on the hold list.
Audiobook listener here. The narration by Donada Peters is phenomenal across the entire series. Listening in order lets you appreciate her consistency with voices over decades. The BBC radio dramatizations are a different beast, but fun after you've read the books.
