It's worth noting the series is essentially complete. O'Brian passed away while writing the 21st, so 'Blue at the Mizzen' serves as a very fitting, peaceful ending to the long voyage. Reading them in order builds to that ending perfectly, giving a profound sense of closure to an incredible journey.

Okay, but can we take a second to appreciate Stephen Maturin as a character? His arc across the series is maybe even wilder than Jack's. From a quiet, observant doctor to a… well, I don't want to spoil it for new readers. His journey is worth the price of admission all by itself.

Can we talk about how satisfying it is that the internal chronology is so tight? O'Brian kept a meticulous timeline against real historical events. You can track the Napoleonic Wars through the books. When a character mentions something that happened three books prior, the date aligns perfectly. That level of detail makes the world feel astonishingly real and lived-in.

The progression also mirrors the naval technology and tactics of the era. You start with Jack commanding a small sloop, then a frigate (the famous 'Surprise'), then ships of the line, and eventually squadrons. You see the evolution of his command style and the strategic picture of the war change from book to book.

Savage Sons Mc books 1-5 is a collection of MC romance stories which revolve around five key characters and the women they fall for.
Havoc -
A sweet like honey accent and a pair of hips I couldn’t keep my eyes off. That’s how it started.Darcie Summers was playing the part of my old lady to keep herself safe but we both know it’s more than that. There’s something real between us.Something passionate and primal.Something my half brother’s stupidity will rip apart unless I can get to her in time.
Cyber - Everyone has that ONE person that got away, right?
The one who you wished you had treated differently.
For me, that girl has always been Iris.So when she turns up on Savage Sons territory needing help, I am the man for the job.
Every time I look at her I see the beautiful girl I left behind but Iris is no longer that girl.
What I put into motion years ago has shattered her into a million hard little pieces.
And if I’m not careful they will cut my heart out.
Fang-The first time I saw her, she was sat on the side of the road drinking whiskey straight from the bottle.
The second time was when I hit her dog.
I had promised myself never to get involved with another woman after the death of my wife.
But Gypsy was different.
Sweeter, kinder and with a mouth that could make a sailor blush.
She was also too good for me.
I am Fang, President of the Savage Sons. I am not a good man, I’ve taken more lives than I care to admit even to myself.
But I’m going to keep her anyway.

One day the new girl at school asks him to teach her how to kiss. No relationship, no strings, a simple student/teacher relationship or is it?

For ebook readers, most digital stores have the series correctly numbered in series order. Just search "Patrick O'Brian" and sort by series. It should pop up with 'Master and Commander' as #1. That's your list right there, ready to download.
Having them all on a e-reader is fantastic because you can quickly look up a term or a character from an earlier book. The series has a huge cast, and the digital search function is a lifesaver. The order remains your guide, but the technology makes the journey smoother.
I love geeking out over this stuff. The series order is mostly straightforward, but that one flip is a famous bibliographic quirk. 'The Nutmeg of Consolation' was written and set after 'The Thirteen-Gun Salute', but published before it. So, in terms of internal chronology, 'Salute' is book 13 and 'Nutmeg' is book 14. In publication chronology, 'Nutmeg' is book 13 and 'Salute' is book 14. That's the whole difference. Some editions and box sets have corrected this; others haven't. So check the copyright dates if you're unsure. 'Salute' was published in 1989, 'Nutmeg' in 1991. If your copy of 'Nutmeg' has a later date but appears earlier in a list, that's the publication order. To read chronologically, just ensure you read the 1989 book before the 1991 book at that point in the sequence.
Can we just appreciate that we're having this discussion? It's a testament to how rich and real this fictional world feels that fans are debating the chronological placement of minor works. Most series don't inspire this level of affectionate scrutiny.
It means O'Brian did something extraordinary. He didn't just write books; he built a universe people want to inhabit down to the last fragment. So, however you choose to read the short stories, the fact you're asking the question means you're already one of us, trying to map every corner of that glorious world. Welcome aboard.
My copy of 'Master and Commander' has a list of all the books in the series in order right at the front. That’s your map. Follow it. The voyage is long, but every port of call—every book—is worth the visit.
If you're looking for a deeper dive, the chronological order is the publication order, but think about it thematically. 'Buried' is about secrets from the past literally being unearthed. 'The Ties That Bind' deals with the obligations and connections those secrets create. 'Pure Evil' confronts the nature of morality in the present. Reading them in order lets you see that thematic progression, which is quite satisfying.
Cool, another order question. Can we talk about the books themselves instead? Like, which villain was the best? For me, it's the Mirror Man from 'Fade to Black'. That concept was terrifying.
