It’s a web, not a ladder. The Santangelo series is the main strand of the web. Other books connect to it at various points. 'Lovers & Gamblers' has ties through the music industry, which the Santangelos eventually invest in. 'Rock Star' features celebrities who might attend a Santangelo party. 'The Bitch' and 'The Stud' depict the kind of ruthless, glamorous lifestyle that Gino Santangelo would recognize. So while there’s a clear central thread, the connections radiate out thematically. You could map it visually, with 'Chances'/'Lucky' at the center, and lines drawn to other books based on shared characters, settings, or industries. That’s your connected reading order—a spider web, not a straight line.

The debate over reading order is half the fun in fan circles. Some swear by chronological narrative order. Others insist publication order preserves the cultural context. I’ve done both, and they offer different pleasures. Narrative order is smoother for story. Publication order lets you appreciate Collins’ growth as a writer and how she wove the universe together over time. My advice to a new reader? Don’t stress. Pick the most famous one, 'Lucky', and see if you like her voice. If you do, you’ll have a blast no matter what order you read the rest. The connections are a bonus layer for fans, not a prerequisite.

I tried to make a spreadsheet once. It got complicated fast because some characters have different levels of prominence. The clearest link is through the Santangelo family business empire—their studios, casinos, and clubs are mentioned in other books as powerful entities. A star in 'Hollywood Husbands' might sign a deal with Santangelo Studios. That’s the level of connection: world-building, not direct plot interdependency. So for reading order, I’d group them by 'family saga' and 'industry tales'. Read the family saga linearly. The industry tales can be read in any order, and you’ll pick up on the familiar corporate names and locations that anchor them to the larger Collins-verse.

Isn’t it mostly the Santangelo saga that ties everything together? I think the recommended reading order for that main thread is 'Chances', 'Lucky', 'Lady Boss', 'Dangerous Kiss', and 'Drop Dead Beautiful'. Some people also include 'Goddess of Vengeance' and 'The Santangelos' as later entries. Those books follow Lucky’s life from her youth onward. Other series, like the 'Hollywood' books, are more standalone but share the same glitzy, scandalous universe. So if you want the full, interconnected experience, start with 'Chances' and work through the Santangelo novels, then you can dip into the others and recognize the occasional crossover character or setting.

The interconnectedness is part of the brand. Collins created a recognizable product: glamorous, fast-paced, and slightly interlinked. For the deepest dive, follow this order: Begin with 'Chances' and 'Lucky' to meet the matriarch. Then read 'Lady Boss' and 'Dangerous Kiss' for her peak power years. Take a detour into 'Hollywood Wives' and 'Hollywood Husbands' to see the industry she operates in. Return to 'Drop Dead Beautiful' and 'Goddess of Vengeance' for her later life and her children’s stories. Finish with 'The Santangelos' as a capstone. This way, you get both the central narrative and the rich world-building around it, making the universe feel vast and alive.

Okay, real talk: the most satisfying way to read them is not in strict order, but in thematic pairs. Read 'The Stud' and 'The Bitch' together (they're loosely connected). Read 'Hollywood Wives' and 'Hollywood Husbands' together. 'Rock Star' and 'Lady Boss' both deal with monstrously ambitious protagonists. This way, you get the echoes without the chronological rigidity.
It's a vibe. You either want to spend time in this world or you don't. The order is just the roadmap. If you're curious, grab 'Lucky'. If you finish it and think 'I need more of this', then you go find 'Chances' and 'Lady Boss'. If you think 'That was fun but enough', you stop. There's no test at the end. No one will judge you for not reading 'Goddess of Vengeance'. Life's too short to force yourself through a seven-book saga if the spark isn't there after the first one or two.
I'd argue 'The Bitch' is the stronger novel because Collins had honed her craft, but you need the foundation of 'The Stud' to appreciate it fully. So the prescribed order is the only way to go.
The fun is in the melodrama, and the sequence builds it perfectly. 'Chances' ends on a note that makes you desperate to see what happens next. 'Lucky' delivers on that promise and then ends on another cliffhanger that 'Lady Boss' resolves. Collins was a genius at serialized storytelling. She makes you wait years between books, but the wait is built into the tension. Reading them all back-to-back now, you get to ride that wave of suspense without the interruption. It's a masterclass in how to keep a reader hooked across multiple volumes. Breaking that sequence ruins the rhythm she so carefully constructed.
I can never keep it straight. Someone on a forum once made a beautiful infographic, but I lost the link. Might be worth searching for 'Jackie Collins reading order' on fan sites or Pinterest.
