Yep, it's the start of a wild ride! The 'Barsoom' books were my gateway into vintage sci-fi. After 'Adventures on Mars' (originally titled 'A Princess of Mars'), Burroughs wrote sequels like 'The Gods of Mars' and 'Warlord of Mars,' where Carter's legacy grows through interplanetary warfare and family drama. The series blends sword-and-sorcery vibes with early 20th-century futurism—think flying ships and radium pistols alongside sword duels. What hooked me was how unapologetically adventurous it all feels; there's zero pretension, just pure escapism.
John Carter: Adventures on Mars' is actually part of a much larger literary universe! It's the first book in Edgar Rice Burroughs' 'Barsoom' series, which spans 11 novels. The story introduces John Carter, a Confederate veteran mysteriously transported to Mars (or Barsoom, as the locals call it), where he becomes embroiled in political conflicts and epic battles.
What's fascinating is how Burroughs built such a rich world back in 1912—way before modern sci-fi tropes became mainstream. The series evolves from Carter's initial adventures to focus on his descendants, exploring different corners of Martian society. If you enjoy pulpy action with a touch of romance and world-building, the whole series is worth checking out. I personally love how the later books expand on Martian cultures like the Tharks and Red Martians.
Totally a series! Burroughs kept writing these for decades, and they get progressively weirder (in the best way). By the sixth book, you're dealing with hidden cities and psychic powers. It's cool seeing how early sci-fi serials worked—each novel resolves its main plot but leaves threads for the next. My favorite is still the first one, though, with Dejah Thoris and the whole 'fish-out-of-water' charm.
Fun fact: this series inspired generations of creators, from 'Star Wars' to 'Avatar.' While 'Adventures on Mars' stands solidly alone, the sequels dive deeper into Martian mythology. Book 3, 'Warlord of Mars,' shifts focus to Carter's son Carthoris, while later entries explore ancient Martian civilizations. The pacing can be uneven by modern standards, but the sheer imagination holds up. I reread them last year and was struck by how vividly Burroughs paints Barsoom's dying world—it feels almost melancholic beneath all the swashbuckling.
