My book club read the first one and had a huge debate. Half loved the immersive history; half thought the characters were cardboard cutouts placed in historical dioramas. I'm in the latter camp. I need characters to feel real beyond their role in moving the historical plot forward. But I totally see why people adore the series for the history-alone.

The character reset every book or two can be jarring. Just when you get attached to a Kent, the next volume jumps ahead 20 years and they're old or dead, and you're following their kids. You lose deep continuity. The history provides the continuity instead. So your enjoyment hinges on whether you're more invested in the historical sweep or in following specific characters for a long, nuanced arc.
