Azlaan's character ruined it for me. He's painted as this passionate, driven man, but his actions often just read as controlling and borderline manipulative, masked as 'junoon.' Zara spends too much of her arc reacting to his whims instead of asserting her own agency in a meaningful way. The supporting cast blends into a blur of people who either enable him or weakly protest.
The book hinges on buying into their toxic dynamic as epic romance, and I just couldn't. If you're looking for a story about obsession, it delivers, but don't expect to like or respect the key players by the end.
Zara and Azlaan, obviously. But the guy who really steals every scene he's in for me is Azlaan's older brother, Fahad. He's not just some generic antagonist; he's got this quietly simmering resentment that feels way more realistic than a cartoonish villain. His interactions with Azlaan are all loaded subtext—you can feel the years of unspoken competition and parental favoritism. He adds a necessary layer of grit to what could otherwise be a purely glossy romance.
Zara's friend Aliya is fine, I guess. She serves her purpose as the voice of reason, but she doesn't stray far from the archetype. The real tension comes from the family dynamics, not the friend group. Fahad's presence makes the stakes feel personal, not just procedural.
I haven't actually read 'Ishq e Junoon' myself, but I see a lot of chatter about it in online reading circles. From piecing together reviews and summaries, the central duo seems to be Zara and Azlaan. The dynamic is classic—he's the intense, maybe brooding 'junoon' type, and she's the spark that either tempers or fuels that fire. There's often mention of a best friend character for Zara, someone who provides a sounding board, and Azlaan usually has a business rival or a problematic family member causing friction.
Honestly, without reading it, I can't vouch for the depth. But the character names and the setup point toward a high-drama romance where their individual passions and conflicts are meant to crash together. It seems like the kind of story where the side characters exist primarily to push the main couple closer or apart, which isn't necessarily a bad thing if that's the trope you're after.

So sleeves gets rolled up and guns get cocked. Clashes, tears and deaths ensues, secret affairs arises, the eternal love rekindles and it starts to cause chaos and war that seems to never end.
I've only watched bits and pieces of the drama on TV, but the main characters stick with you. There's Rafay, the intense guy who gets completely obsessed with love, almost to a scary degree. His love interest is Zoya, I think she's supposed to be this pure-hearted, kind of naive girl who gets swept up in his passion. Then you have the rival, Farhan, who also loves Zoya and creates a lot of the conflict. The parents are huge too, especially Rafay's mom, who's very traditional and disapproving – that whole generation clash drives a lot of the plot.
Honestly, Rafay's character is what makes the show for some people. He's not your typical romantic hero; he's possessive and his love borders on unhealthy, which is why the show sparked so much debate. Is it true love or just obsession? The drama really revolves around that question more than anything else.
Man, trying to remember all the characters in 'Ishq e Junoon' is like trying to count waves. The core duo is obviously Dua and Ibrahim, whose whole enemies-to-whatever-that-was kept me hooked, though honestly Ibrahim's brooding act got old faster than milk sometimes. Then there's the best friend, I think her name was Farah? She was mostly there for Dua to vent to. The real scene-stealer for me was Ibrahim's stern father, Mr. Ahsan, whose disapproval was a character all by itself—you could feel the pressure he put on Ibrahim from across the page. Also, Dua's family, her mom especially, added that layer of tradition versus desire that defines so much of the tension.
It's been a minute since I read it, so I might be forgetting some side characters, like that one guy from Ibrahim's work who kept causing problems. The cast isn't huge, which works because the story zeroes in on that obsessive, all-consuming love (or whatever you want to call it) between the two leads. Everyone else basically orbits their drama.
