Lysandra's political maneuvering saves his neck more than once, and Garron's past failures shape the entire conflict. So yeah, those three. Anyone else is supporting cast.

Where the story loses me a bit is with the antagonist, the Shadow Chancellor Malcor. He's pure evil for evil's sake, wants to drown the world in darkness, yada yada. Felt like a cardboard cutout compared to the messy, morally grey characters like Vor. I also had a soft spot for the old archivist, Finch, who pops up occasionally with cryptic lore. He wasn't a key player in the big battles, but he felt like the soul of the world. I think the author tried to do too much—introducing a dozen faction leaders and past heroes in the second book—and it diluted the core group's impact. I cared more about the dynamics between Elias, Kaela, and Vor than the fate of the entire continent by the end.
