Hallie is brilliantly crafted as his opposite, but her role feels like it’s to expose the flaws in his philosophy. Even the secret letters work because they let ‘Author Julian’ communicate with Hallie without his real-world hangups. So yeah, the people are great, but the most pivotal ‘character’ might be the gap between Julian’s art and his life.

On this read, I paid more attention to Julian’s internal conflict. Their secret letter-exchange subplot is the engine for most of the middle act, and it lets Julian’s true, softer voice come out before he even realizes who he’s writing to.

Okay, so the main ones are Hallie and Julian, obviously. But I feel like people sleep on Oma, Julian’s grandma. She’s not just a sweet old lady; she’s practically the puppet master of the whole story. She hires Hallie to mess up Julian’s pristine garden, knowing full well it’ll get under his skin and force them to interact. That’s some next-level meddling. Hallie’s chaotic energy is fun, but she’s also kind of stuck, you know? Still holding onto this teenage crush and not really moving forward. Julian seems like a typical grumpy hero at first, but his POV chapters reveal he’s more just… terrified of anything unpredictable, which includes his feelings.
